It's a biased propaganda movie.

And the sad thing is, that so few people see that production as what it is.

Yep

Rise of free to play business model not covered at all.

Nothing more than the coverage of a dota 2 esports tournament.

Basically its nothing more than the puff pieces you see on each athlete during the olympics.

Dota 2 is never explained it any way that makes anyone who hasn't played it care. Hell it doesn't even add anything for people who do. All they do is say things like "this has strategy", but they actually show nothing at all.

reply

yeah it's not about ending a message to play Dota 2, it's about peoples lives

I play LOL, don't care for DOTA, and I gave 10 star for this movie.

Please correct my grammar, make my day.

It‘s a documentary about the competitive Dota 2 scene. To show how „big“ this scene actually is. That there is demand for it. That the scene can compete with other „sports“. And if you try to tell me that E-Sports is no „sport“, then tell me why Pool, Chess and Darts are considered to be „sport“.

And yes, since it‘s a docu about teams playing a specific game you can see it as a commercial for the game itself. But other documentaries about other sports, companies, products are exactly the same. Simply because of the content that they show. Because, in the end it is some sort of an ad for the content. This is not really a negative thing and I don‘t really understand how someone could think of this as a bad thing. But I guess, there just needs to be some complaining for sake of it. It‘s also not a „biased“ docu, because it also shows the downsides of competitive gaming (school-, family-, life-problems) and it doesn‘t try to hide it.

There is no point to explain the Free2Play-System, and there is no „rise“ of this system, since such games have existed for over 7 years. And this system is used so widely and different that explaining it in this kind of movie would be just plain wrong, because Dota 2‘s F2P-System differs from others. It‘s just the name of the movie which is a reference to Dota 2 being Free2Play. The whole documentary is what it is. A documentary about some competitive players who are struggling with problems and just want to „live their dream“ by winning such an important tournament in the competitive scene. It‘s free to watch for all. Of course its audience are mainly players who play Dota 2. I also don‘t watch documentaries about other sports that I‘m not interested in. Or do you?

The concept of the gameplay gets explained by one of the players. There is no point in „showing“ strategies. The point of it is to show the players and their way of life with gaming as their job. It‘s a documentary after all and not a strategy guide. There are enough videos and guides with strategies to look up. I have never watched a documentary how chocolate is made and getting pissed that they don‘t reveal their secret recipe for it. (Or is it actually an ad in disguise?!?!) I have never watched a documentary about a certain company and their successful products and expected to get their secrets revealed. Just as these successful teams like NAVI, Scythe Gaming, Ehome will not reveal some of their „secrets“ why they are so good.

Really a documentary made by the company behind DotA2 about the professional DotA2 players is biased towards that game? MIND=BLOWN, moron.

The good thing in life is when we can do both the useful and the pleasant.

Since Valve is so accomplished in creative matters, why not make a great doc that also advertises their game?

It's a very interesting look at a contemporary phenomenon. Propaganda or not, it was a great movie. Great storytelling for a doc.

Hey the guy has a point, Valve is using this as a propaganda film so we don't go outside and play anymore lol.
