another Netflix production letdown

I would give it a 6/10 tops.

You're being generous. It had a pretty good cast and an interesting premise but it didn't deliver. It was almost as bad as some of those syfy movies. Even the effects were subpar. 4/10

When will Netflix stop getting serious actors to appear in their bad productions? Peña and Caplan don’t need to be in this kind of shit.

reply

Does Netflix actually produce these or just buy them after completion?

It sure feels like a lot of Netflix originals follow some kind of spreadsheet formula to hit a dollar cost target.

1) Spend most of the money on 1-2 big name stars, everyone else can be from the extras pool
2) Spend a little on special effects, but don't be afraid to toss in "pew pew pew" as a sound effect to stay on budget
3) Spend very little on locations, sets or props
4) Make the narrative hinge on an undisclosed element or plot twist we don't have to film

The Netflix tag is starting to become an "avoid at all cost" sticker for me. Yet to see a good Netflix-produced movie so now I tend to avoid them.

Annihilation is pretty good.

I can't quite decide what the real problem is with so many Netflix originals. There's a bunch of potential reasons.

1) Bulking out the catalog with bargain shopping castoffs from mainstream production houses
2) Haven't gotten any momentum or solidified their own production system for movies
3) Run by a bunch of MBAs who think quality entertainment is a formula
4) General resistance by Hollywood people/system who see Netflix as a new studio system undermining control and lucrative paydays

I'm sure it's all that and more.

reply

this is a good point. they seem to be picking up stuff that other studios have discarded. like the cloverfield paradox.

Netflix Original=Straight to VHS

I didn't manage to finish this ((
Thought it would be like Skyline or smth. No such luck.

I stopped watching after the first 15 minutes. All it accomplished was to make me want to rewatch Spielberg's War of the Worlds.
