The allied solution made no sense
How did the Martians get infected by the horses when they were like 18 stories above them and never came in direct contact with them?

my memory tells me that an otherwise uninjured Martian was infected AFTER a machine had been felled. The Earthmen were going to use the "horse police" to disperse the crowd that had gathered to lynch the (now ground-level) Martians, and then to take the Martians into custody.
You're partially correct. There was one martian that was captured after falling on the London Bridge and it was exposed to the police horses and died. That's how the scientists discovered the aliens' vulnerability and it made sense because there was direct contact. But then later the military let lose thousands of horses to get stomped on by the Martian walkers under the premise that doing so would infect all the other Martian invaders. But that doesn't make any sense because there was no direct contact between the horses and the aliens nor any chance of "splatter" transfer since the Martians were so far up from where the slaughter was happening It would be like standing at the top of the Empire State Building and getting the flu from some guy standing on the street below who was coughing.
