The Ending

Has anyone read the short story which is the basis of the film and know how the story ends?

reply

Yes, we got it out of the public library (even though the story won the Edgar prize in 1984, the book containing it seems to be out of print). The story is quite different and doesn't cast any light on the movie's ending. Ozon just used the cross-dressing motif. In the story (SPOILER ALERT) David's wife is still alive (and doesn't know about his cross-dressing) and the plot involves adultery. Claire (called Christine in the story) is mentally unbalanced: consumed by guilt about adultery and conflicted over her sexuality. At the ending of the story, as she and David begin their sexual encounter, she murders him with a knife.
