Saw ithe U.S. Premiere in New York

Saw it at FIAF in New York, in it's U.S, premiere earlier this evening (Sept. 15th). I knew nothing about this film other than it was,directed by François Ozon and starred my favorite French actor, Romain Duris. I loved it. Great performances by everyone, and just a really different, unexpected story. Kind of reminded me of an Almodóvar film, but in a French way.

Yes, yes! I do agree that it is very much like an Almodovar film but in French and in based in France. Perfect description. Loved the film, too.

Great performances by everyone, and just a really different, unexpected story. Kind of reminded me of an Almodóvar film, but in a French way.

The only thing that resembled an Almodóvar film was that the story dealt with a transvestite. Almodóvar's films are usually comedies, involve rich character development, and have intricate plots. This film didn't really explore the character's need to dress in women's clothes. It also didn't explore the female lead's repulsion and attraction to transvestism. It was satisfied just to show it happening, remaining on the surface.

There were some touching scenes, especially at the transvestite club, which worked primarily because Romain Duris gave such a strong performance. I think the film could have been more insightful if it focused more on how Duris' character became that way.

Funny the OP mentions Almodovar, who turned one of Ruth Rendell's other stories (Live Flesh) into a film, changing the plot & characters somewhat (though not as drastically as Ozon with this one). Ozon also directed A Judgment in Stone (another Rendell novel).
