Could've Been Great, but Fell Short...

I was really looking forward to this movie, but it let me down for the following reasons:

1. The acting was really bad. D. Woods is 32 years old and playing a 16 year old and she completely was way over the top with it. Her character came off like a 9 year old playing a 16 year old. It just didn't make any sense. Crystal (the girl with the really bad wig) was probably the worst and the least believable. Even the main character's acting was way over the top. Mo'Nique still acted as if she was in the movie Prescious and she was barely in the movie and the scenes that she was in just weren't poweful enough for me to really feel the situation between her and her son.

2. I felt like there was too much going on. The entire storyline with his sister being abducted was a little overkill. It actually annoyed me.

3. The main character was so obviously gay it made me mad. They really could have at least tried to play the "straight" act up, but come on. You're so secretive about NOT being gay, but you hang out with a gay dude, you're in the drama club, you're playing a gay character, you're having sex in front of your house, your freely visiting a gay cruising spot. It was like, come on.

4. The white guy character, the love interest, he was just awkward. He was creepy. I would have avoided him at all costs. And then I don't understand why the main guy auditioned for the movie where he plays a kid who's being raped by another man, but then at the screening it was an entirely different movie.

5. I felt like the dialogue (Script writing) could have been way better.

Anyway, I gave the movie a 5 out of 10 because there's not an option for a 4.5 out of 10.

YES what the hell was that? Or was that a different movie, but then Marshall also submitted footage he'd taped of Randy as his own movie? I guess? That's the only explanation I can think of. But why would anyone applaud for that "film" anyway (random romantic shots of a dude). I thought at first it was this creepy student film like, what starts out as love turns abusive etc...but then it ended. And I was like what happened to the rape scene. wtf

Yeah it was off. I thought the lead actor over-acted. I thought the mom catching them having sex in front of the house was a cop out. I was thinking, please DON'T have that happen, too obvious. And if it does, it makes it even more weird why Randy would have risked doing it.

It was all over the place too. And convenient that the sister showed up at the end, though it would have been annoying not to find out what happened to her. But even that was anticlimatic too! Randy finally learns his long lost sister is found and coming home...and all he does is smile a little and then is like "Well anyway here's my boyfriend" lol.

And damn took a turn for the dark with his final dream with Todd in it. That Todd had also killed himself and was coming in the dream to bid farewell. That made me sad and seemed weirdly overly depressing versus the tone of the rest of the movie. I know the other girl killed herself too, but Todd doing it too and saying goodbye on top of it was too much. And then how Effram becomes a meth addict and all.

And was the hypocrisy of the Pastor dad hating on gayness and premarital sex ...yet encouraging his daughter to get an abortion... intentional?

Ps. I liked the dad though, even if he seemed too perfect (the way he was written). But the actor made him likable.

WOW! Good point on the dad hating on the gayness and premarital sex, but encouraging the abortion. I didn't even catch that one. That makes me want to bring my score down now.

Um, D. Woods was born in July 1985. That's only thirty years ago, so where did you get thirty TWO from? And this movie was filmed in 2013 so at the time she was twenty-eight.

reply

She was born in 83 not 85. She lies about her age.

reply

I was just following off of her IMDb page. Is there a source saying she was born in 1983 or have she mentioned this herself in the past?

reply

Either way, she's too damn old to be playing a 15 year old. Her face (not trying to be rude, but you can tell she's old) and her bad acting proved that.

reply

She didn't look that old to me and I liked her acting.

Spoilers, anyone?????
