Brandy's mom - helicopter parent

An interesting article re this phenomenon:

I dealt with many such parents while working at a university. I had seniors whose mothers - much more likely than dads to hover, not sure why - would accompany them to, if not *into*, job interviews. Yikes.

I was thinking as I was watching this movie that it was over the top in its depiction of our obsessive use of the Internet and social media. But then, here I am doing the same thing.

That mom was no helicopter parent. She was the United States fuâ…˝king Air Force. She was one step away from running ads in German newspapers to hire former members of the Stasi or Gestapo to help her sift through the NSA-esque amounts of data she was collecting on her daughter.

At first it seemed like the mom played by Jennifer Garner was well-meaning but awkward in her obsessively keeping tabs on her daughter.

But at the end, she was truly cold and mean.

reply

That's the understatement of the year. She literally drive a teenage boy to attempt suicide just because he dared courting her daughter! Her behaviour was downwright psychopathic, bordering on criminal.

reply

Yeah that character seemed like she had a legitimate mental disorder.

Yep, she was the worst example of over-controlling, while in contrast the woman with the Hollywood wannabe daughter wasn't controlling enough and her permissiveness is the daughter's downfall getting ahead in the world. The two contrasting parental styles was a bit heavy-handed in the story but they get the idea across of two extremes.
