What happened to the son?

I know he drowned in the bathtub, but how? He was fully capable of sitting up. Somebody please explain this.

I assumed he must have slipped and fallen and hit his head, leaving him face down in the water and he drowned. We see the husband putting up a handrail in the tub so I think that was trying to prevent the same kind of thing from happening to the new kid.

That would make sense, but they show the kid actively thrashing in the bathtub. He wasn't knocked out.

In the script it explains that he committed suicide.

He was just kidding.
In the script it explains that he was running some kind of extortion scheme that ultimately backfired.

Yeah, I don't know, it sounds weird to me, too...a 7-8 year old kid not being able to just sit up in the water or whatever.

Lol really? A 7-8 year old boy just couldn't take it anymore, huh? Maybe they discontinued his favorite breakfast cereal, or grew weary of never winning PUBG, couldn't hack having to pull just...one more stupid weed out of the stupid poopy-headed garden.

Nah, I doubt it was suicide, but it doesn't make much sense for him to have drowned in the tub either...he wasn't exactly an infant. I don't know.

But the thrashing around that we saw, was just the other child's imagining of the event. He'd just heard that he'd drowned in the tub, wasn't given any additional information, so...maybe their boy just hit his head or something, but dreamer kid envisioned "drowning" as an experience involving lots of thrashing.
