The kid's voice ruined it for me

I cant stand old kids talking *beep* toddlers... he is supposed to hace 8 years and keeps talking like if he's 2 or 3 years old... the movie was better than average but the kid just ruined the whole experience for me...

I posted this in another thread, but it works even better here:

While I enjoyed him in Room, not so much here. In fact, he was the biggest distraction from the film for me (I'm speaking of Before I wake, not Room). He is speaking very noticeably in a forced "baby voice". Imagine a 8 year old boy speaking very deliberately and OTT like a 2 or 3 year old. However, by the time the film was in full swing, the boy's excellent performance in every other possible way made up for the extremely distracting affectation in his voice. I found myself noticing it less and less as the film progressed.

In his defense, that is something the director should have corrected (instead, the director is probably the one who asked him to play up his voice, out of the misguided belief that it would add some kind of creepy kid factor).

Agreed; perfectly stated.

yeah, probably was something the director asked him to do it...

Dude you know Jacob Tremblay was probably like 6 years old when they shot this right? It was supposed to come out last year, meaning it was likely filmed in mid-late 2014. Jacob Tremblay is only 9 years old currently, meaning he was probably like, 6-7 when this was being filmed. Cut the boy some slack.

The Titanic sinks, Bruce Willis is a ghost, and Rosebud is a sled

So? I have a 5 year old son and he's NEVER spoke like this. The pitch, yeah, but he doesn't speak like a toddler. If he did he knows he would get in trouble. It probably wasn't his fault though, they made him act like that. This and a tv show called The Whispers has the worst case of kids speaking like toddlers I've seen so far.

reply

oh my god please keep you name alive and be alwaysilent man. Your son must be possessed then common 'i have a son who never spoke like that or else he would be in trouble' REALLY? you are sick a *beep*. why do you even post stuff like that its just plain stupid.

reply

Oh I don't know, maybe because some of us want our children to actually speak English properly for their age.

I made sure my children spoke properly and if they didn't they were chastised for it.

That is what a good parent does. This idea of children speaking poorly that has taken root as acceptable in recent years is what is sick not a parent ensuring their child doesn't sound like a moron.

So maybe its you who should keep silent.....

Seems to me like youre jealous. The kid looks super adorable and his voice is accordingly adorable as well. Pls hide your ugly low voice tone kid we dont wanna see him.

Well the character (Cody) has been tossed around by different families who did nothing more than using him. And by constantly needing to adjust to new families he learned how to act (overly) polite and cautious.

It only suits his character that he also had a timid and toddler-like voice. Apologizing has become part of his habits while fear has seized control over his mind.

I think that little actor perfectly captured this character's fear and timid mannerism.

Totally agree with you meneerli.

reply

I agree. First off, the toddler voice didn't even stand out to me, but I guess I can see what the OP meant, in hindsight. But it also makes sense to me, considering all this kid has been through, that he might have an affectation. So if anything, the director made the right choice.

And as for the previous poster who said his five year old knew not to speak like a toddler because he knew it would get him in trouble.....all I can say is wow.

reply

meneerli, i agree w/ you word for word. i thought Tremblay was perfection in the role...voice and all.

reply

meneerli You nailed it. There are some freaking NAZI's on this thread!

reply

I second this. This kid rules. People need to chill.

Ignore the smoke.
