Explain?

Ok, so I need to preface my question with some back story.
I'm 32. I'm American. I watched "Mean Girls" right after I graduated from a public high school and can honestly say that it was damn spot on and mostly still rings true to this day (I have a son going into high school in a year; I hear the gossip, see the cat fights on Facebook, etc).
Ja'ime: PSG is airing on HBO late Sunday nights. It's marked on Dish TV as NR (not rated)/ TV-MA (mature audiences) and L, SC (language, sexual content). I was watching "Getting On" (an ER-esque comedy) and then this came on, so I stuck around to watch.
I'm halfway through ep. 1. It's funny and cute... but...
Can someone explain why there's a man dressed like a teenage prep school drama queen?
And WTF is a prefect??? That was in the HP series, but I didn't know what it was so I thought it was some made up term and at that point in my life, I didn't give a $h!t enough to google it because I thought it was fake. Obviously it isn't. Can someone who isn't American (or is American but "gets it") explain?
Thanks in advance.

Ha ha! Where's the "like" or "+1" button??

It is very funny because it's supposed to be a teenage girl that thinks she is gorgeous and fabulous and takes herself so seriously. Sometimes these teenage Paris Hilton types are in fact gorgeous, even though they are horrible bitches. But sometimes they are really unattractive too which makes them even more of an interesting/laughable character, because not only are they totally full of themselves, but they are also completely deluded.

He could have got an ugly girl to play the role of a bitch with a freakishly inflated sense of self worth, but doing it himself just makes it far better and funnier, but that's just my perspective.

Ja'mie is a character that Chris Lilley had on his Summer Heights High show that aired on HBO around the same time as Flight of the Conchords (so around '08, I'd guess). That show was made up of him doing a bunch of different characters all at one school. Essentially an updated version of a variety show but he's settled on one character. I think part of the joke is how Ja'mie is always talking labour how hot she is and Lilley may make one of the least attractive women ever. And I think because it's a man playing her, he gets away with being as awful as teenage girls can be. I def remember some girls in high school acting like this. Also, a prefect is essentially like a hall monitor in the US. So they have some authorities over other students and I feel like many of the people who were in those positions in high school (we had cafeteria monitors) were kind of the rude popular kids.

It's definitely a strange show. It's funny to watch an obvious male (almost my age, I believe) play the part of a supposed "quiche" (bahaha) teenage girl. It's somewhat disturbing.
According to Lilleys imdb page, it's Australian humor... I realize it's set in Austrailia but I have Aussie friends that have no clue who Lilley is, so is it actually Americanized Austrailian humor??

reply

No you don't. You're full of *beep* clearly here to just to talk *beep* about this show. I'm from Australia, everyone here knows who Chris Lilley is, he's massive. And the way the girls are acting in this show is EXACTLY how girls act in schools here.

reply

I was wondering if the OP was being deliberately thick.

reply

I wouldn't say everyone, most of the people I work with have no idea who he is.

reply

[deleted]

I know who Ja'ime is but, until today, I had no idea who Chris Lilley was. He is not "massive" in the States.

reply

If you think him playing a teenage girl is disturbing just wait til he makes out with some of the "teen" males....or the last episode.

reply

If all you're getting out of the show is "it's funny to see a guy in a dress", this show isn't for you.

Ja'mie is actually from Lilley's first multi-character/same actor series We Can Be Heroes (I believe it had a different title when it aired overseas). I think the reason Lilley brought her back for Summer Heights High is because she was the most memorable character from his maiden series and she fit well within the narrative of SHH where again, she tested really positively with viewers.

I understand from a foreigner's perspective, it's hard to see why Lilley keeps getting the funding that he does for his pet projects (especially since his last show got negative domestic criticism) but as an Australian, Lilley's appeal lies in his commitment to bringing a level of reality we don't normally get in our original content. A lot of our prime time homegrown shows tend to tell the same story over and over again or present a very romanticised idea of modern Aussie life. Lilley's shows, although tremendously over the top, do touch on places in our society that very rarely get that kind of attention. The juvenile detention centre and barren outback town from Angry Boys, the slipping through the cracks public school that is Summer Heights High, the over privileged suburbs of Ja'mie: Private School Girl etc. Lilley doesn't just embrace his source material, he slaps it on the wrist too.

The man in drag is just the setup; exposing the self-imposed entitlement of the young, Caucasian and rich is the punchline. Does this make Ja'ime funny? No, not really. Lilley has lost a lot of punch I think since his first product, and none of the show's we've seen from him since have been as tightly wound or focused as WCBH was.

Maybe his next show Jonah (based on his delinquent school boy from SHH) will be better?

@Anti-Stereotype Girl
I live in the US and he got it right. I agree with your post completely. I appreciated that he showed the underside of schools. Looks like Australia has the same problems as we have here.

I do not think the show is for kids. I think the name Summer Heights High does him a injustice because I do not think it got to the right audiences here. It sounds like something teenagers would look at I only looked at because I was sick bored, went through the HBO on Demand list and saw it.

It took me a second for me to get the way they treated Jonah, he was hilarious but that is what happens here. In the states it is black people over there it is the Pacific Islander. And I do not care what anybody says here it is a social economic problem. They put them in Special Ed and whatever happens it is their fault. The theater teacher was right on too.
It took me a few minutes until I saw Ja'mie and knew it was a man with a bad wig. lol. He is really good and I am going to look up more work he has done. And I would love to see Jonah. I hope he does it.

Ja'mie is one of several characters created by the star, Chris Lilley.

Earlier series "Summer Heights High" had about a half dozen such characters, and was brilliant,

Now Chris Lilley has been pumping out series that focus on just one character at a time, I find these - Ja'mie included - to be weak and watered down.

He's still a comic genius, but having seen his high potential in Summer Heights High, it's hard to get excited about these single character spnoffs.

Oh by the way prefect is a student picked to enforce the school rules with their peers. Think of something like a hall monitor, or an older student who is tasked with keeping the other students in line.

explain: You need to get a sense of humour.

I also think, if the OP has not seen Summer Heights High, or even We Can Be Heroes, some of the context may be lost. Those of us who have seen them know Jamie, we have seen her and how awful she can be, and knew what to expect with Private School Girl. If this show is your first experience with her character, you can be forgiven for being a little confused. I mean, the story in JPSG is pretty self explanatory, but given the context of the previous shows, it is a little clearer.

I live in Houston and there were a few things I didn't know. But at least the grades seem to be the same. I look at movies that take place in England and nothing seems the same here. But I get it. Her character is suppose to be popular but she is messing with the kids that are not popular. Just like Hall monitors here they are usually some kid that was picked on and when they get power they turn it on. But she has done the opposite. I find it hilarious that it looks like Ja'mie has combined the theater teacher from Summer Heights High and Ja'mie together on this show.

What is a school captain. And how does she get to be these big deals in school? No one likes her! Not only the students.

I think she does have Americans girls pegged a little bit too with the lip gloss being put on constantly. I just think mean girls are the same everywhere. Oh and her father seems to come from South Africa and she is always talking about immigrants.

I caught Summer Heights High because I was looking on the HBO in Demand and saw it. I would never look at anything with the word High in it but I was bored and saw the other series. It was hilarious But I had no idea who the star was. I asked about him and they said he is popular in Australia. He so does not look like a girl, and he is not even cute. But Ja'mie is such a pushy b*tch you never notice it.

I was unhappy they only did one season but when I heard about this show I had to look at it. I wish they would do a show about Jonah. Who I think was the funniest and most complicated character on the other show. Just like here the big 8th grader is a bully and gets picked on. Just like here they would believe the white kids over him. And they are just as bad as he was. I think it stunk they sent off to Tonga. But he was my favorite character. Bring him back!

Jonah is getting his own show next year.

Sat and forever am at work here.

reply

i saw this show two nights ago and while i didn't laugh at the humor, i laughed at the awkward feeling i got. this show is really interesting

reply

wait do you think that the little ginger kid made up all of the abuse he said Jonah put him through?

The point of Jonah was that he was very clearly a dick. There were just reasons and influences behind his dickish behavior.

reply

Wait, didn't the original poster say she watched mean Girls right after graduating High school, and today is 32. Mean girls came out in 2005. Either the poster has their dates messed up or is a f ucking idiot.

reply

Seriously. You should have gone up for the show.

Look around yourselves people.

OP, a prefect is a student (usually a higher level student, like a senior) who is given authority over other students. They are, essentially, student officers.

I've only heard of prefects in private or boarding schools.

reply

I went to a public school and we had prefects. Pretty sure all schools had them here in Australia.

reply

A prefect is like what a "school captain" is in the US, but they have a bit more power, ie can give another student detention. In my experience, the cool kids were never prefects. It was the dorky studious types that went for the role.
