Chris Lilley's acting is too good for this to be funny

In this and Summer Heights High, he REALLY becomes the characters. He's a great actor. But it's not funny. For it to be funny it needs to be a PARODY of these people, not actually being them. He doesn't know how to do comedy. I'm more disturbed, by watching a grown man really become a teenage girl, and it's really not funny.

No, I think he's very funny. And incredibly touching, too. He really gets inside these characters to the point where you feel bad for them and pity them. He rand tears out of me during the finale of Summer Heights High, which was definitely not something I was expecting when I watched the first episode.

I think that, to play comedy well, one must commit to the character. After all, the character doesn't know what they're doing is funny.

Exactly what I thought. Didn't help that he only played a single character who happens to be insufferable with no redeeming qualities at all. I hope he gets his groove back.

reply

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's not a caricature but a dead-on impersonation he's doing.

Well, for my two cents, this is not funny to me either. But... as a female watching it, this is horrible to watch. He's got Ja'mie and her vacuous, high and mighty friends down pat, and that is what is horrible.

I got over the "man playing a teen girl" thing a bit faster as I grew more interested in the character and its actons. For this reason, it got under my skin and it's hard to watch as I wanted all those little twerps tied up in a sack and thrown into the ocean. I figure an episode or two max is enough, it's a bit long in the tooth to watch Ja'mie for more than that.

It knows what scares you. It has since the very beginning.

Right, it's actually NOT over the top - which makes it fascinating in that it could be a time capsule piece to show just how far society sank during our current period. A great example of something being too "on the nose."

"Long in the tooth" means old. I see how the show can make one be uncomfortable, but if you are in the right mood it's fun. But I also need Closed Captioning on to get all the jokes.

Sounds like someone was picked on by some private school girls...

Yeah...Chris Lilley. He's seen them, and got them down pat.

it's funny to me. The fact that you don't have to do a parody to mock these people is a sad indictment on society, which is totes ridic, I reck.

Most people miss the fact that this show is satire and it is very subtle for the most part. People are expecting all of these "gags" we are used to in mockumentary type comedies (think Borat). But we are given something that is more of an exaggerated reality - we all know a "Ja'mie" in real life and we laugh at how ridiculous people can actually be. I also expected more out of this show, but for different reasons. But the comedy did go over the heads of most people. I think it has to do with the American vs British comedy schism.

American vs British comedy schism.

It's not British, it's Australian.

He's a genius. And it's hilarious.

This guy is an absoloute genius and I have never seen anyone, let alone a man, portray a teenage bitch aswell as him. So well that I can see what the OP means. I want to punch this girl rather than laugh at her as he plays her so incredibly well. Dont get me wrong I do laugh aswell but I get where the OP is coming from. Jonah and Mr G however makes me roar with laughter
