An inferior and hipster-ized version of Fish Tank.

Just bad.

I posted the same thing. Totally agree.

The fact that we can loathe this movie but love another movie that essentially dealt with the same subject proves that: it's not the subject! It was just an obnoxious movie.

Well, it could also "prove" that you're both idiots. I'm just saying.

I love it when someone says something like this—they don't realize the same could be said about themselves. If you believe opinions are sh*t, then so are yours. It's a beautiful thing, equality is.

reply

But one person's opinion doesn't or shouldn't automatically equal another. The opinion of a person of below average intelligence and that of someone is is intelligent are not equal, but stupid people like to think so.

reply

But how do we measure a person's intelligence when all we know about them is that they threw out a trope that is essentially an offshoot of "I know you are but what am I?"

I really liked Fish Tank. I just checked now and I rated it a 10. (I gave DoaTG a 9, both very high scores.)

Everyone yelling at each other here in this read is ridiculous. We're not talking about the latest superhero movie... it's okay to disagree without throwing sand in each other's eyes.

Anyway, I thought this movie had a real, unique soul-- something I find extremely rare in narrative films. I would never call this a hipster "imitation" of anything. The acting, story, characters, editing, set/costume design and cinematography were all genuinely, truly inspired. This movie might share a general theme with Fish Tank (as do many other movies), but these two movies have very much their own story, in their own place and time, and they are both rare gems.

reply

Both movies are actually very good. Why is everything called hipster now?

reply

The graphic novel that this movie is based on was written long before "Fish Tank" came out, so you're talking out of your ass. And calling something "hipster" means NOTHING. What makes a movie "hipster"? Does it ride a bike? Have tatoos? Sport a lot facial hair?

I can't tell millenial hipster douchebags from millenial anti-hipster douchebags personally, but neither group is seemingly capable of appreciating an autobiographical movie set way back in the 1970's.

I honestly like this film more than Fish Tank. But that's not saying a whole lot because I just don't think either film is all that great. I mean, they're good just not great.
