Which are they? Soldiers or Marines?

The unit in question is referred to as Marines in the Netflix synopsis, soldiers in the IMDb synopsis, and I'm not sure which in the 30 minutes of the movie that I could stand to watch.

The first engagement at the tent city completely turned me off. Everything about it was terrible, from the acting, direction and CGI to the "sniper" with a magic rifle. If you can see what was wrong with the rifle, its optic and how it functioned (the optic AND the rifle) then this movie is definitely not for you.

So I ask again - are they soldiers or Marines?
Those are two different things.

You'd have to see the rest for an explanation.

They're mercs.

You're spot on - sad to say, in the neverending quest for movie mediocrity, "Soldiers" and "Marines" are used interchangeably - even though they're quite different, and even though it would take about five seconds of editing time to get it consistent in the script. I guess "wearing BDUs and carrying a rifle" always = "soldier."

I also hated the scope that their "sniper" (looked more like a DM) used - why not save some post production SFX and just use a standard reticle?

There is an amazing new assisted optic called Trackingpoint, but it doesn't work quite the way it's depicted in the film, and it's incredibly expensive.
I wouldn't mind trying one, but don't particularly want to own one, even if I could afford it. If you can't get the job done with irons or a decent optic...

...and Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lotta ice, whenever he's away

the snipers semi auto bolt action rifle was just... awesome...ly bad

I can crank my .22 Marlin Bolt Action pretty damned quick - but that has a shorter throw, and even with that advantage I can't quite match their DM. Good catch - forgot about his extraordinary rate of fire! That's another movie "gun trope" I've seen a few times - a boltie with semi-auto rates of fire.

If there are that many hot women just in one squad of Marines, then I was in the wrong damn branch.
