The English officer is not Lawrence (whom we know survived the Arab revolt), but the filmmakers almost certainly modeled the character quite a bit after him.
shareLawrence helped to organize British assistance to the Arab Revolt. Lawrence personally blew up a number of trains, but he was untrained and did an amateur job. The professional dynamiters faulted him for using too much explosive for too little result.
The British officer in this film is a lieutenant of Royal Engineers, so he obviously knows something about blowing things up.
