How many times have you seen Room?

Apologies first if this topic has been discussed, I don't visit the Room forum that often.

How many times have you or are you able to see Room?

As for me, only once. Whilst I acknowledge Room is a good movie (I rated it 8), it took a lot out of me. I can't bring myself to experience the trauma again. It felt that real. The actors/ actresses were excellent. The storyline was that strong.

I'm guessing a few years down the road, I'll be able to watch it again. Another example was The Road, which I only rewatched 1 or 2 years later, although I felt Room had an even stronger effect since it was better.

I have watched it at least 4 times. I love this movie. I love the amazing acting and the beautiful message.

Jacob Tremblay was magnificent. In fact too strong since I can't rewatch it yet. I know this has been discussed in other threads but it's a travesty he was not Oscar nominated. I still remember the little girl who won Best Supporting Actress in The Piano (1992) and Jacob gave an even more powerful performance, no disrespect to her.

You know I have really lost all respect for the whole awards system. I am actually shocked that the actress playing Ma won with such a "traditional" role. That young man put in a better acting performance than most grown male actors did that year and knowing he created such a great work of art is all the validation he needs. I think of awards as more of an insider thing yes it's great for whoever wins them, but for me I don't look to awards to tell me what is art or good. Besides I hope the young boy has a long career and unfortunately there are horrible stories about young actors who got too famous too fast.

The young girl I believe is Anna Paquin who went on to be in X-men and True Blood.

I was reading somewhere within this Room board that Best Actor went to Leonardo since he had missed it so many times previously hence deserved it. That was really a 'hahaha wtf' moment when I read that.

It's mentioned in the Trivia that filming was done in sequence for benefit of Jacob and it clearly shows. There were 3 distinctive personnas - the actual Room experience, post-traumatic syndrome, and new life. He showed how a 5 year old kid would most likely be in these 3 different scenarios.

It's a pity for a powerful film like this, which in main topic I have mentioned only watched once for me, he has not been acknowledged officially via the Oscars. But let's not forget though, he has won other awards for his portrayal in Room.

I did not see the movie he won his award for. I know that Leonardo is a good actor so I am not terribly shocked he won. That said he is not the first male actor to win an award because he "deserved it" after being passed over. I think Al Pacino won for Scent of a Woman instead of what he should have won for all along The Godfather and even Denzel Washington had great leading performances before they gave it to him for Training Day.

Well I am happy he has been recognized because he certainly earned it with his performance.

I try to have an open mind about others opinions, but I honestly can't fathom how anyone cannot see that Brie Larson's performance is simply a masterpiece of acting. It was one of the most realistic performances I've seen where she had to go through an emotional roller coaster, and I know it all came from her skill and talent, not having to rely heavily on the director to push her. Jacob Tremblay is just a kid, and he needed pushing and mentoring to help him sink into the character. He was still good though.

I have watched twice. Once in the theater, and then again after I bought it. I love it.

reply

I've seen it 6 or 7 times. Once in the theatre and then purchased it and watched it right away with directors commentary.

I've also listened to the audio book 4 or 5 times.

Room really really grabbed me.

This is right there with Grave of the Fireflies for me. Great, affecting film that I will probably never watch again. Maybe 10+ years in the future if I come across it starting on HBO or something, but I will not go out of my way to experience what this movie put me through again.

Thanks for the sharing of your view, which appear to be similar to mine.

On the Best & Worst board I listed my 3 films which I acknowledge is good/ great but yet cannot find the courage (?) to see again. These are Room, Grave of the Fireflies and American History X.

Once is enough.

Twice. I saw it the first time and had to see it again to watch in awe the masterclass of acting and directing. The story is depressing and not easy to watch, which is why I assume many people couldn't watch it again. But if you appreciate the hard work and talent it takes to make a movie this good, you would want to watch it again to admire it, no matter what the subject matter of the story is. That's why I like movies of all types, because if the people involved in it are great artists and storytellers, they can take a story about anything and make it amazing

There are movies which you acknowledge are good and compels you to a rewatch just to re-experience the impact it. There are movies which you acknowledge are good, but was too depressing for you to watch again, since you feel it had too strong an impact. Room for me falls into the latter.

I love this movie for many reasons and I've seen it five times. An absolutely fantastic film!

Let me out... Now!
