What was the deal with Umezaki Senior

there was a scene at the start with the japanese girl, having arrived from Horishima with scars on her face, from the Nuke

and then we have a story of the japanese mother and son seemingly oblivious to the aftermath problems of wartorn country.

Seems a bit insincere to me, but OK, so did Holmes actually meet the father and gave imprecise advice or did he make it all up, as did the father?...

He made it up, "his first foray into fiction" he calls it. He never actually advised the father. Holmes seemed to think it was a kindness.

It was obvious to me that he never met the father, and that meeting between the father and Mycroft never happened. Notice in the "flashback", when Mycroft says, "What should Mr. Umezaki do?", the shot cuts to Holmes sitting there staring blankly, then it cuts again to old Holmes with the same blank stare as he's trying to think of a good answer. The reason the "flashback" pauses at that point is because Holmes is making it up as he goes, and the "flashback" can't continue until he imagines how the rest of the conversation played out.

The entire thing was a work as fiction, as he admits later.
