was the case based on an Sherlock Holmes novel?

Was the case based on an Sherlock Holmes novel? the case where he was hired to spy on a mans wife, follows the woman and after tracking her down they talked and she later committed suicide... Was that in any way based on one of the Sherlock Holmes books?

I have read the entire Holmes canon (I took up Holmesiana in the 1940s) and I never found any such plot.

It was fictional to this movie. I can't read what the title of the Watson story is that Holmes is reading, but the film adaptation Holmes went to go see (with Nicholas "Young Sherlock Holmes" Rowe, no less, as "Matinee 'Sherlock'") was called (retitled?) "Sherlock Holmes and the Lady in Grey." But that title - which shouldn't be confused with an actual film called "Sherlock Holmes and the Woman in Green" - doesn't exist.

Also, in the Sherlock Holmes films of that time, Holmes was being played by Basil Rathbone. The actor playing Sherlock Holmes in the film "Sherlock Holmes and the Lady in Grey" is apparently named "Armitage," which you can see on the posters as this Holmes is waiting in line at the cinema. Confused yet?
