Oscar nomination for McKellen?

I personally think he deserves one. Such a great performance, but it is early in the year and this film might not be on a lot of people's radar.

Well, he is British, so ...

But this film is probably too small to give him that platform.

I think it'll get him a much-deserved nomination, but likely not a win just because the movie itself isn't making a big enough splash I don't think. But he'll likely get nominated quite a bit during awards season and hopefully picks up at least one.

Yes, I completely agree. His performance was stellar, but it's not a BIG picture.

Those who study history are doomed to watch others repeat it.

reply

I did like the performance but thinking logically it will be forgotten by the time of the nominations
As harsh as it sounds if he were to die between now and then, then most likely yes

I certainly hope Miramax/Roadside mounts a decent campaign for McKellen to be recognized for at least a few nominations and, hopefully, an Oscar. After Fassbender, Redmayne and DiCaprio, the race is pretty open this year, so I'll be cautiously optimistic that he can be nominated.

Hope so, but Hollywood is ageist (Christopher Plummer is the only elderly actor to win in recent years, and that was in supporting). To even get nominated older actors often have to be riding on a BP nominee like Bruce Dern with Nebraska, and that's unlikely to be the case.

And the Oscars is frequently a networking contest. The Academy like to reward stars who make a lot of Hollywood movies. McKellen is an British actor who mostly does theater and British TV. Yes the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit and X-Men movies are major exceptions, but they are exceptions, and in any case he's done with Gandalf now and he's probably about done with Magnetto. It's not like he's starring in a ton of British comedies that play well worldwide like Judi Dench does.

He certainly deserves one, and it is a real shame that an actor of his stature has only two nominations in his entire career, not to mention no wins.

But I think he has two serious strikes against him getting a nomination for this.

1) the movie was released too early
2) his superb performance isn't really flashy enough

He could probably overcome one of these obstacles, but two is probably a little too much. Still once can always hope.

He was great but not award worthy great. This Holmes is rather one note. A well played note but one note nonetheless.

I think the young actor who played the kid should actually be nominated. He's the best child actor that I've seen in years.

He has my vote. Brilliant performance.

reply

I hope so, for his portrayal as Holmes but also as an OAP dealing with memory loss.
