When Ian McKellen breaks down and says "I care about him VERY much!", that's when I realised this is what separates the greats and the mediocres.... a great actor can pack in so much emotion in one simple scene, it's enough to win him a significant prize of some sort. (or so I think!) In contrast, Laura Linney's acting was so meh *any* average actress could have replaced her and not affect the film.
shareIt was a great scene. Sherlock thinks of emotion as something that just gets in the way of facts. Indeed, much of his difficulty in dealing with people is that he just can't get himself to feel in ways that us common people feel as "normal", but this scene shows that he cares very much in his own way even if he doesn't always show it well.
