R rated sex themed movies with no sex and no nudity

I mean, what is the point of this?

I don't understand why you would make a movie where sex is the central element of the plot, have it be R rated, and then not have any real sex scenes or nudity to speak of.

I understand watering down a film to get a PG-13 rating, but what's with this weird trend over the last decade?

During the 90's sex based R rated movies had LOTS of hard sexual content, as you would expect. Erotic thrillers were a big genre, and teen sex romps, etc.

But now we've entered a world where you have movies like "Sex Tape" and "Sleeping with Other People", both rated R and both largely centered around sex, with absolutely no real sexual content.

I'm not expecting porn or anything, I'm not expecting it to be Fifty Shades of Gray, but it feels weird and lifeless to see a movie ABOUT sex and hear the characters talking about sex for 2 hours and not include any actual sexual content.

Leslye Headland is a failure

It's not necessary to include actual content... unless you lack the ability to think beyond your genitals.

I, and I'm sure others, am quite adept at reading the parents guide.

So, what did you really have to add to the discussion?

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

reply

Wardrobe and sex scenes have gotten racier over the years, but less actual nudity.

Haven't see the movie, but the title of the post got my attention.

I totally agree with the OP.
Just saw The to-do list with Aubrey Plaza and AGAIN a female director. The movie features handjobs (movements, expression, sounds even the sticky stuff in the hand of Plaza) and BJs and heavily thematic material BUT absolutely no nudity. Not even a (female) nipple.

It is most certainly a choice of the director but I can't understand it and I disagree.

Of course they don't have to turn it into a soft core, but for example in the to-do list, Plaza's character loses her bra in a swimming pool. For 5 minutes you hear the comments of all the people there about the "iny tiny titts" and other comments but you don't get to see her breast. And that diminishes the joke, because it takes some time until she realizes that she lost her bra and the audience doesn't see that either. You only hear the comments and see Plaza from the neck up.

It is PRETENTIOUS if you ask me...

Pretentious? You're whining because you didn't get to see a set of tits. How is it pretentious to not show EVERYTHING? Lack imagination, do you?

reply

Why would you have needed to see her boobs for the joke to work? Your comments are laughable. There are plenty of ways for you to see boobies.
