ABC game is awful

The item has to start with a letter, and they totally cheat and are allowed to do so. On the all star version they got the letter f and Alex got "fresh chicken." Seriously that is a huge stretch. Why not just grab what ever you want and call it food? Be harder on the contestants.

It really doesn't bother me. The way I look at GGG is that it's a kinder, gentler, more upbeat and lighthearted version of Chopped. The rules? Well, they're sort of made to be broken, or at least bent a little. That's in keeping with its lighthearted atmosphere, so I'm okay with it. And I'm normally a real stickler for obeying rules!

I like Cutthroat Kitchen more to be honest. Alton is an evil bastard, and it makes the show more exciting.

reply

I'd like Cutthroat Kitchen more if the judge was aware of the sabotages the chefs had to work with. On GGG the judges know exactly what twists the chefs are dealing with, and also which chef had an advantage. I think it makes their judging more, I don't know, fair or informed or something.

That would make for a boring show and GGG for me is boring, because of that. Way too easy.

reply

Having hundreds of channels and thousands of shows to choose from means we don't have to watch something that bores us, or that we just don't like for some reason. That's why I stopped watching Chopped. I used to watch it religiously, but the stuffier and more serious it got, the less I liked it. IT'S JUST FOOD! Do the judges really need to act like they're deciding the biggest issue ever in the history of the universe?!

I got annoyed with Chopped as well. The concept got stale after a while. I can only take smarmy judges for so long.

reply

You and me both, revsader!

Besides, I always felt badly for Ted! How come he doesn't get to taste the food along with the judges? At least on GGG Guy occasionally rips open a bag of chips or something, or sneaks a few bites from one of the judge's plates.

I thought it was ridiculous that in the "f" challenge, AG was allowed to get away with dragon 'F'ruit. I actually used to like her, but she's just way too snarky on "Chopped" any more. If I hear her say one more time "...I just didn't think it came together as a cohesive dish...", I'll stop watching that one altogether!

Of course it's not a cohesive dish when you give somebody bananas chips, alligator filets, rum and kohlrabi.

reply

The difference is that in GGG, all the contestants are hindered by the same challenges.

In Cutthroat Kitchen, a judge could be more biased against a bad dish that had no sabotages than against one that had a few.

reply

The judges are aware of the sabotages; they just don't know specifically what they are or who got stuck with them. In fact, sometimes they make guesses as to what the sabotages were and who got themโ€”and they're often wrong.

See? I don't. I don't like the fact that the chefs get weird sabotages thrown at them. At least, for the most part, on GGG, they are all playing with the same handicap. I understand that sometimes one of the chefs will get ONE extra ingredient or something but that's not the same as everyone using both hands and one chef has to cook with one hand behind their back. That takes it to a whole other level, IMO.

reply

Grace, I agree, I liked watching Chopped, but this show is more fun. There's less saltiness from the judges and contestants here.

I have no problem with using some creativity to make things start with a particular letter. I thought getting creative was the whole point of the show.

On the Feb. 15 show, they had to choose "M" for the first task. Three of them chose "Filet Mignon." I think this demonstrates what the OP said. It would seem that they would be allowed to select Filet Mignon if the letter was either M, or F, or probably "S" calling it "steak." Heck, for that letter, let's just let them grab anything in that aisle if it can be called "Meat."

I allow that some things should qualify for a couple of letters--I would say the meat named above could classify as "Steak" for "S" or as "Filet Mignon" for "F." But that's it.

One contestant had "Goat's Milk." This product is known by that two-word name, and it seems fitting to say it fits that way OR under "M" as "Milk." But if their letter was "C" I don't think they should be allowed to choose "Cow's Milk" because it really isn't normally called that.

I think they make the rules for the ABC game too liberal--this has nothing to do with politics--and it would be better to challenge the contestants by limiting their items to what they are normally called and the item's basic name, as in my examples above.

reply

They aren't allowed to use 'cow's milk' for C. The actual name on the packaging has to start with the letter. If it more than 1 word, like fillet mignon, either word is okay. Goat's milk has goat in the name, normal milk does not. That is usually why we see them use Coconut milk when they get C.

And they do crack down. One guy wanted crab legs, and said well its crab meat. He was told No, he needed to use actual tub labelled 'crab meat' to qualify as the letter was in the title.

Fillet mignon is fillet mignon. Why should they have to dumb it down for people who only know 'steak'?
