5 Ingredients or Less

So clearly, there are some "exceptions" to this round.

I saw Justin Warner throw a huge chunk of butter into a pan for his Hollandaise sauce. He did not choose butter as an ingredient.

I saw McCargo make an entire dredge (flour and spices), none of which were ingredients that he chose.

Obviously you have to just give them some obvious exception like salt and pepper (it would be a shame if everyone had to burn 2 of their ingredients just to season their food), but where do they draw the line?

I've noticed that they give them access to basics. Oil, butter and flour seem to always be available. There might be a few other things, I don't know.

I read some time back that all contestants have certain basics, such as oil, flour, sugar, butter, seasonings, etc. at their stations. This show would be ruined if we had to watch each contestant taking 5 minutes to shop, so they could get these sorts of items, along with the foods for the dish to be made in that round.

A complete list of what they always have access to was not provided.

I've just assumed that they're given certain basics, like oil, flour, seasonings, etc. Otherwise it would be nearly impossible to pick five ingredients and actually come up with something meaningful.

They're given those ingredients for every single challenge. There's really no point to making them grab all that stuff too.
