We the consumers and the targets of their marketing have to make their current practices more expensive than change would be. The way we do that is stopshopping at companies that maintain abusive practices. They and their stockholders will be hit in the pocketbook and start taking losses, and they will find it more profitable to raise the standards for the workers. That is the only language they understand, and it involved a very educated and very cohesive public. Start with those kids with their pink sandals and their shop shop shop mentality. When it is more accepted in middle schol to boycott a retailer for their practices in Bangladesh than to appear in their clothing, the impact will "trickle up". They cannot fire all of their workers in order to keep ahead of the falling sales. They would rather raise sales than lay off workers. So if they understand that by branding themselves as humane and publicizint their willingness to take a smalelr share of net profit, they will make that up in volume and goodwill. Kids will choose to shop their stores. But it starts with us. We have to know how to manipulate the sellers to the degree that they are manipulating us to make this a fair fight.
