Tom Hughes

Anyone else thinks that babyface Tom Hughes is a total miscast for the role of a spy?

reply

No. He may look young but I have seen him in other productions and he is an excellent actor. I think he will change your mind by the end of the series.

reply

Yes

He's supposed to be their pretty boy seducer. The rest of the cast is refreshingly ordinary looking.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

I agree with urogomphi. After two episodes (still early) Tom Hughes does not look right for the role, nor does he carry the authority that his role requires. I realize he is supposed to be an inexpressive person, but that does not completely explain away his wooden acting. I do not believe he was hired for his acting skills. The rest of the cast is superb.

reply

I disagree. He finds a way to be expressive without having to pull faces. His eyes say a great deal, and he conveys pretty well that while he is in control for the moment, there is a heckuva lot broiling underneath. There are so many young, attractive actors who are also talented, so why would they ever settle on someone who is pretty but can't act?

I'm not totally sold on the writing of his character, though, and maybe that's where the real weakness lies. I can see why the death of this woman haunts him, but I find that backstory a bit cliche and contrasting with his seeming logic and control about everything else in his life.

Till the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere, O my Soul.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, ultra_mafic.

Just looking at the cast you know they didn't hire random people based just on their looks. It was about talent. As for the writing, I feel there are certainly some areas that are lacking. I am not always into spy type shows or movies, however I am really into this show and I think it is wonderfully acted.
Tom is a great actor, just look at his other stuff. He's actually really good at doing that scary thing like where his face may look calm-isn, but you can tell he could explode at any moment. He's intimidating, at least in my eyes. I like him in this role.

I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart!

Tom is fantastic in this role! so he slipped his cover with a spy he turned and let it become personal so in turn the operation with Odin has become personal. Tom is amazing how he can be steely and in a moment charming. I've seen him in several roles now and suspect he will hit it big at some point in his career unto the big screen, it's only a matter of time and the right role.

reply

I don't see a problem really. At first I too thought his babyface was off-putting, but he's since grown into the role IMO and I think it works for him. How old is he supposed to be anyway? I'm guessing late 20s at best.

reply

I like him in this role, he's different than the norm.

Now that you mention it,he is so "pretty" that almost anything but modeling, acting seems odd. But I thought that he was being used as a "honey pot",so it marked sense...and then I just forgot about it because he is doing such a good job acting,I believe his character.

reply

No different really than Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby.

I think my percentage of Chimp DNA is higher than others. Cleaver Greene

reply

I thought it was funny at the beginning with him holding hands with a girl in the woods coz he was doing the same thing in the Miss Marple episode he was on. I too thought him a bit of a strange choice but the camera guy certainly zoomed in on his expressions I thought.

reply

Considering they expect him to be able to take women to bed to get information out of them he'd better be good looking! I couldn't see Billy (or was his name Bobby - the Mama's boy) being able to do that job.
