What's with the Tobias actor's voice?

He talks SO slowly and seems to have a lot of trouble enunciating his words. Maybe he's an alien, ha ha. His voice does remind me of Liam Neeson's, so I looked him up to see if he too was born elsewhere and just has trouble with an American accent. He is indeed from London.

The face of that other guy he works with has been driving me crazy ... where have I seen him before?? Ha - he's from "Mad Men." Happy to see those guys getting other roles.

Yes, David Morrissey is British. He also played an American in The Walking Dead, and he's used the same southern-inflected accent in both shows.

Attempted Southern accent. Failed attempt. If an actor wants to sound genuine the best way would be to spend time in the area talking to the residents. When they don't notice an accent is when you have it right.

reply

Yes, it's like he's been directed to "play Neeson". Well, if you can't get the real Liam ...

When I was listening to the commentary from the movie "Waking Up in Reno", Natasha Richardson said a Southern Accent is a lot like an English accent. It didn't make sense at the time, but that may be.

Ironically she was married to Liam Neeson until her untimely death in a skiing accident.

reply

Oh! Whatever may have been said in some commentary... a Southern accent could not be any further distant from an English (as in British) accent if it tried!

Ha! That's actually quite funny because yes, I am an accent expert, as it happens. If you have a mind to educate yourself further on the topic before replying again, this is a great place to start www.dialectsarchive.com

I don't care.

There are many, many English actors playing Americans with southern accents -- including Morrissey's costars on TWD, Lauren Cohan and Andrew Lincoln, Stephen Moyer on True Blood, Lennie James on various TV shows (Low Winter Sun, TWD, Jericho), Idris Elba (The Wire, lots of movies), Dominic West (The Wire), and many others.

It's true that, for whatever reason, actors with British accents find it easier to play Americans with southern accents. That might seem counterintuitive, but it's true.
