In the future their computers probably are more efficient, than today's computers.
For example today's PC is more powerful than room full on computers back in the day.
Though, they have no excuse of having no backups.
Assuming his brain is anything like the humanics, he can't be truly backed up. Just as the models based on Lucy had her decision base they were nothing like her. In broad terms the subconscious was the same, directives layered over that but the rest came from experience. Same reason Ethan wasn't backed up. This was touched on in the pilot. Although, TAALR could be a completely different technology.
