They Always Cancels Good Shows

They always cancel good shows that people want to watch. I just don't get it. And then crappy shows end up staying on forever. There is really something wrong.

Oddly the Midwest is where networks look to for their focus groups. So, imo, I think this show was too progressive with its philosophies, eg religion, souls, what it means to be human. I can only imagine what the Bible Belt and the rest of Americana thinks of the previously mentioned.

reply

Hmmmmm. I do think you may have a stereotyped view of the Midwest...

reply

And the Bible Belt.

Problem is that extant was rather special effect heavy with all the technology being portrayed so the studios require a higher number of people watching to bring in the advertising dollar's and the lesser shows with smaller budgets need less viewers to be kept on the air which is why the new star trek is going to only available through an online subscription service because the studio know on the air the numbers just won't be their.

When saying that, there are two shows that are oftenly mentioned in the context of the good shows that got cancelled : Firefly and Extant.

I have to say that I personaly disliked both.
I don't find the concept of cowboys in space remotely appealing,
and as for Extant.....I guess I got tired of conspiracies and all the soapyness that comes along. It is not that I dislike it, but I just didn't enjoy it. My mom seems to like the show, though.

To me, one good show that was cancelled after one season for no obvious reason is Out of practice.
I found that one really entertaining and can't believe that it had just one season and two Broke girls have fiv.

Oh I loved Out of Practice - it had such a fantastic cast w/a great plot, this show should not have been canned. I agree Two Broke Girls got old real fast for me and I really liked the cast just too much recycling story lines imo. I live in New Orleans (South of course) and many people I knew loved Extant, I did as well but it seems all the good shows get canned; I could make a list but I would be here all day.

I'm surprised at the poster who said they never heard of this show before it appeared on TV. I saw so many previews for it that I was sick of them. I watched maybe 3/4 of the first season and then lost interest. Ditto for Under the Dome - I think I only watched 3 episodes.

I realize some people want to be challenged mentally when they watch a show. But for me, I just want something mildly entertaining without having to strain my brain trying to figure out what the hell is going on. Perfect example is the show "Lost". Loved the first couple of seasons, then it started getting all weird with the flash backs and the flash forwards and the island moving, etc. I gave up in Season 4.

"Vulgarity is no substitute for wit".

That's how I found the show, looking through Amazon Prime Videos.

You want to know why good shows are always being cancelled? This right here. "I just want something mildly entertaining without having to strain my brain..." Too many people think like this, so that's what we get. Something like 12 seasons of an intellectual cesspool like 2 1/2 men, and 12 episodes of Firefly. Walking Dead has the highest cable ratings ever, and is dumber than a post, and the Americans barely has an audience. People are dumb, and they want their television that way, too.

Battlestar Galactica dealt with a lot of serious issues and did very well. The tech was to incidental in this show so I couldn't get into it. I suspect those who would like it for the drama would be put off by the tech. It seemed like a tech show that wasn't about the tech which alienated it's target audience. But I'm probably wrong because I feel the same way about The 100, which is still going.

reply

Yeah, but Battlestar Galactica only lasted one season (unless you count Galactica 1980 as the second season), so not a great example.

I don't do a lot but what I don't do I do amazingly well. You just don't notice.

reply

Exactly. All the shows were you have to think people don't watch, those are the best to me.

Science-Fiction viewers tend to have higher standards than the fans of some network comedy.

If a SF show offers up an illogical, cliche ridden plot it will get skewered relentlessly, especially if the show is attempting to be more of a drama than say something like Chuck, where it's a SF comedy. The latter get far more leeway from fans.

reply

But in this case they cancelled a crappy one...a season too late

Well... this show was far away from being good, to be honest.

reply

The masses don't enjoy shows like that.
