Why, or what was the reasoning for changing the title of this film from X+Y for the U.S. version..

Because Americans are stupid and they wouldn't understand the original title.

It was changed after film festivals, most likely for marketing. The title is akin to its original source material (Brilliant Young Minds) and it is similar to the well loved A Beautiful Mind.

I just noticed this, too. Bad decision to change the title imo. "X+Y" isn't great but "A Brilliant Young Mind" is just terrible.
