39 minutes: What happened?

The first 39 minutes were at least barely watchable (even with all the stereotypes, bad acting and unsympathetic characters) but then it just went off the rails in a matter of minutes. With the world falling apart, the chick wanted to swim naked and talk about her sins and the bible, the Irish man just got too irritating, everyone was born same day, then looters, then demons who walk like spiders! What Carter had in mind?

PS. Was this Sci-Fi? It looked like Fantasy to me (ritual symbols, demon-like creatures, etc).

Once a show gets into the realms of religious BS it is difficult to take anything seriously. Demons are just so last century... Usually that happens later in a show when it already has to reveal parts of its mystery to get going (like in Carnivale) but in this case it happened in the pilot.

I can see why Amazon passed on it.
