I'm disappointed by the cancellation

"The After" was the main reason I renewed my Amazon Prime subscription.

I watched the pilot completely cold -- had no idea of the premise, who directed -- nothing, and I was very impressed and have been looking forward to the series, checking to see when it comes down. Now, to find it's cancelled...

I've read postings of Chris Carter fans who must have been expecting Mulder and Scully to jump out of the ambulance and simply refuse to like anything that isn't related to that other show.

reply

While I guess there's some truth in the notion that Carter got typed as The X-Files guy, he hardly had to reach the entire X-Files audience to make this thing a hit by Amazon standards. There's lots of people out there who never heard of Chris Carter, and weren't big X-Files fans, and who will give just about anything a try.

People tried this and didn't like it.

Amazon is a business. They are here to make money (eventually, someday). What the show cost must have greatly outstripped what they projected they could recoup from fees.

I'm a prime subscriber because I like the two day free shipping. Plus sometimes I watch old movies for free there. Honestly, there's nothing they produce that I want to watch. But shows like Transparent are gaining an audience--by appealing to a large enough audience--and by keeping their budgets down. Obviously Carter failed on both counts.

reply

I'd agree Amazon decided to pass on it for the reasons you state if they'd done it in a timely manner. Instead this stop-or-go has dragged on for an uncharacteristic amount of time. Based on what I read in the business sections I'd say it has more to do with Amazon trying to figure out just how - and how much - they really want to take on Netflix and other streaming platforms.

They've got quite a few plates spinning right now and tapping Chris Carter was a good move on the part of whoever makes those decisions at Amazon. Known success, experience with both TV and film, can fill multiple roles behind the camera, good instincts for casting actors. I think the pilot for The After was promising and shows always evolve from their pilot episodes. I think it more likely Amazon discovered it needed the money elsewhere and they were biting off more than they could chew. So far I certainly haven't heard they're committing to a different show with someone else.

The After looked like it would require a large, Lost-sized cast. That alone probably ultimately killed it for the bean counters. I appreciate the fact Carter didn't pull back on the reins cost-wise just to try to sell another show. He never has really.

reply

Bean counters? It looked very cheap to make, low grade actors.

The audience response was bad

What's with all of the idiots claiming that this was cancelled because people didn't like the show? Actually they did like it and this was one of the shows that WON during the last amazon pilot season and was picked up for a series. Tons of people liked it and were looking forward to it. It was probably the most anticipated new series for amazon after that pilot season. It was ultimately cancelled because of production issues.

People that didn't like the pilot... why the hell are you even on this board? Get a life.

reply

This is a discussion board, not a praise board.

Unfortunately the pilot wasn't great. Badly acted and poorly written, it had an interesting premise though so it's kind of a shame it didn't get picked up.

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, Darling!

reply

It looks more and more like CC walked away from it when he knew he was gonna get more X Files on the air.

Where does the aggression come from? Sniffing glue?

This was my favorite of the list. It was flawed, but it had so much potential. It looks like sci-fi and speculative fiction shows are not very well liked with the amazon crowd. Pity.

Movies are IQ tests. The IMDB boards are each person's opportunity to broadcast their score.

reply

Yeah it was definitely flawed! But the story was too much like lots of others right now. The apocalypse thing is worn right out.

reply

I think I disagree with that. I think the apocalyptic trend is still strong. It seems to be particularly fascinating to young people. It's always good for giving them the opportunity to evaluate universal truths; they can choose the values that should survive the "end of the world." Plus there's always the attraction of "how far would you go to survive." I like the trend. And it's always fun to see what people will do when all the rules fall apart. There are so many opportunities for examining characters and personalities in all kinds of crazy situations. The possibilities are endless. I hope the apocalypse thing lasts. Maybe it makes me kind of simple, but it's one of my favorite genres.

reply

I guess but this stuff seems to come in waves like 1st it's vampires then it's zombies now it's apocalypse stories - the problem is we get hammered with it until everybody just wants it to die and go away. That's the bandwagon thing for you I guess.

Just re-watched the pilot. Still liked it quite a bit. Logged in to IMDB to see why the series has been taking so long to produce. Cancelled? Disappointing. This had promise.

reply

It would have taken a _ton_ of work to fix it enough to make a show that lasted more than 1/2 a season.

reply

Likewise. Amazon just lot it's prime shot for '15 with that cancellation. Pulled up the Amazon Originals main page and there was nothing there to tempt me to look beyond the initial screen.

Even little Hulu (free) has got more of a draw then the giant Amazon streaming. Sad.

All those saying the actor pay was a factor are clueless. None of those shown would be getting any sort of living wage from their participation. Production costs is what killed that shows next step. No way they would be able to draw the income to pay for it.

Here's what some people think about Amazon's biz model - 'The real plan is to get suckers to option good idea to Amazon for peanuts then on sell the stories to other companies for big profits cutting out the little guy'. Look at their offer : 'We option your script for this measly $15k cash payment and we have the right to renew the option indefinitely even if you change your mind. If we can find someone who wants to buy your script from us for a ton of cash we will pay you the big $200k and it's all over - the millions go to us and you have $200k to show for all your work and all the months or years while it was locked in option.

But the After was never going to fly. I'm a huge CC fan but it just wasn't very good. If Amazon is serious about making shows it would not have been a good choice - not many believe CC took it seriously anyhow and was just waiting for Fox to O.K. the new X Files revival series.

This x1000
I have been waiting on this show for a few years. Finally bit the bullet and came to check, was devastated it was canned. The actors were all good, the premise had so much potential, the quality was great. I was left wanting more.

To the hacks at Amazon who didn't suck Chris Carter's knob to get this made, you *beep* lost.
Betas was great, it was funny and witty. Then came Silicon Valley.
Amazon failed. Honestly, watch Betas, it was *beep* hilarious.

The After Pilot was *beep* spectacular. Everyone I saw that watched the pilot, spoke about it online, talked about it online, etc, all *beep* loved it. Not one person I spoke to or saw talking about it hated or even disliked it. I actually just read the Sense8 plot and though *beep* me, surely The After has started by now, better check and then da-duh. So again The After on Amazon was first, then came Sense8 (having not seen Sense8 and just assuming where The After could maybe have gone).

Betas. The After.
What's next Amazon? A Hand of God remake by another company, cause let's be honest, a few of those episodes definitely lacked *beep* clarity and direction, but overall the show is great.

I'm sure there are another couple of Amazon originals I've seen, but those 3 atm are the ones springing to mind and so far 2/3 have been somewhat remade/re-moulded by other companies.

Maybe you don't get it Amazon, maybe I'll put it clear as *beep* day, you beat companies and people to the punch, yet you are a minute man in the sack. Toughen up, put in the practice, squeeze a little tighter and you'll be number 1.

However cancel shows with as much potential as The After, well get *beep* I really wanted to see something else other than the X-Files and you mob just let Chris Carter walk, shame, you should have let him go bareback....then swallowed...

reply

I just watched the pilot and was completely intrigued by what was going on. Then I noticed the original air date and realized it must have been cancelled. How disappointing. I really wanted to see what would happen next.

I be v Dr would have watched it if I had known.

settle down

reply

nah bruh, let him get fired up, many of us feel the exact same way!

reply

The pilots are no scam. Amazon just opens a process for a public which happens behind closed door and allows feedback. At the same time it should be clear that the audience is not necessarily capable of judging whether a good show is in the material, whether it is worth the cost and whether the chemistry between all parties involved is a good foundation to cooperate. When it comes to those points they have the ability to overrule the voting (which btw. is a classic Kickstarter problem: sometimes what initially was promised is the worse alternative; is it a deal breakers to do the right thing opposed to what was promised?). Which is the reason why they won't crash and burn.

That said, of course they should reveal that strategy and allow insight into the process, including giving reasons for not picking the show up. In the end they want to tap into the potential of the feedback, so even if it might cost them some effort, they should commit to that idea and offer some transparency.

I was very interested in it. I'm thinking Chris Carter should have tried to continue with "The After" rather than trying to get "The X-Files" going again.
