The movie is a cautionary tale.....

The world is in upheaval. We have no idea of what tomorrow will bring. Bury...BURY... cases of peanut butter, crackers, chili, canned soup, CASES of water, cans of vegetables and cans of fruit (which do exist) without ANYONE knowing, not even your best friend, (100's of yards from your home). Then plead with your doctor, TODAY, for antibiotics and bury them with first aid kits. IT WILL PROBABLY BE THE ANTIBIOTICS WHICH SAVE YOUR ASS. Without saying, store as much gas as you can with at least two well working generators. Finally, put up any painted sign on your door which could possibly deter thieves. If sickness is rampant, write "Plague". If it's not sickness, paint, "Starving, went to 'nearest city' to find relatives and food." You absolutely have to fool these bastards into leaving you alone.

Good advice, no doubt, but not terribly useful for a typical 7,500 sq ft. suburban lot, with neighbors on both sides who will no doubt notice all that digging, let alone an apartment in the city!

Even in an apartment, you can stock up a bit, though. I'm amazed by people who keep almost no food at all in their homes and are always running out things like toilet paper. Who knows when you'll be housebound for a few days or a week?
