Are you laughing about Laura Benanti? I thought she was excellent in the role, which was to be expected, given her work in theater; she was, after all, understudying, and then playing the role of Maria in SOM on Broadway, when she was not long out of high school. She's been cited as a bright spot in other shows, some of which were otherwise not very lauded; a particular case is the tour de force number she performed in the musical of WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (here's a recording of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4iLJqB5ulE).
There were other good elements to that SOUND OF MUSIC, including, especially Audra McDonald as Mother Abbess, among some others. I've got to agree with the original poster, though, about Stephen Moyer--I kept trying to find some reason they would've wanted him. Finally, I just accepted that it's a case of really bad casting.
Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.
