Carrie Underwood sounds terrible on these songs

Just goes to show, not everybody can sing everything. She sounds great doing her country music but it's actually painful to listen to her try to sing these songs. She's way out of her depth.

Try to guess which famous celebrity I am.

reply

It's more painful watching her act.

reply

Both are extremely painful. Like the OP, I think she is talented in her usual milieu, but well out of her depth in musical theatre.

reply

It's not just that country is her forte.

She uses Auto Tune. That's no secret. She's fallen flat during more than one live performance.

Saw TSoM when it aired again recently--changed the channel after 20 minutes.

It's been awhile since I watched this SOUND OF MUSIC. I didn't know Carrie Underwood much at all, and had very low expectations of her, given most reports. In the end, partly due to all the bad buildup, I found her to be not so awful; worse in the acting department than the singing. What interested me was how much better she was in her work with Audra McDonald than in other scenes. It was like the force of Audra's performance dragged her in and onward, into far truer emotion. Still not near as good as the Maria I'd seen in an excellent local production (a young lady named Bri Sudia http://brisudia.com/Site/Up_Next!/Up_Next!.html), but kind of sweet in her way.

Anyway, I wondered how you feel about Mary Martin's vocals, on the original cast recording.

Mary Martin had a lovely voice and did a solid job. But she has the misfortune of being compared to one of the great voices of our times, Julie Andrews.

reply

Well, of course, Ms. Martin didn't have that misfortune for a few years, from the time she originated the role until the movie was released. I've always slightly preferred her performance of the songs to Julie A.'s (despite Julie being a goddess of song), partly because I grew up with the original cast recording and was a little disappointed with the movie when I saw it as a young kiddo in its original run. They'd cut my two favorite songs, which were the only two with a bit of bite to them, offering a break from the relentless sweetness of most of the score. I've come to appreciate the rest of the score more as I've grown, but at that time found it a bit too sugary overall, and I still think the show's much better with the songs that got cut, and without the two added for the movie.

Of course, without Mary Martin, we'd never have had any SOUND OF MUSIC, since the project was her idea (and her husband's, I think) in the first place.
