Dreadful performance by Brit Marling. Dreadful show all round.

What on Earth? Was she stoned while acting in this? Her peroformance was so boring, I don't think at any point she even raised her voice, no matter what was going on there was no change in her tone. People getting shot all over the place? Monotone reaction. Need to give an inspiring speach? Monotone voice.

As for the rest of the show, it was just plain boring. A sniper is shooting people at random leading to the scene cutting back to the police HQ discussing whether that was number 4 or number 5. The whole thing was boring. Hopefully they'll cancel any upcoming series.

I think you are wrong on both counts.

Brit Marling is good in anything, and here represents calm and the voice of reason. With that in mind, it wouldn't have suited her character to be swearing and shouting all the way through.

Why you think it was boring I don't know. Decent story about a sniper, interesting look at how seriously the police consider its public perception, amusing (I'm sure it didn't aim to be laugh out loud funny), and altogether a great pilot. If you didn't get the 4 or 5 bit, I'm guessing this was never going to be something you would enjoy.

I'm sure Danny Boyle won't stay with it, but if it keeps Armstrong and Bain, I look forward to a series very soon.

Couldn't agree more. Well said. At first I thought the American was being played by a Brit who can't do an English accent. Then I discovered she is a Yank. She is a monotone Yank who can't act!

She is speaking in a well-modulated tone of voice -- not a monotone. It is a vocal style that utilizes the lower end of the voice range in order to communicate calmness, confidence, and competence.
