REFERENCES

So like most I watched this introduction to the new show on it's first showing, and while I really enjoyed it, there were a few small references I think myself and others spotted.
My favourite was that John, in the beginning of the episode, was watching a clip from 'Stingray', and mentioned that it was his 'favourite show'. Anyone else catch something?

reply

The clothing lady Penelope is wearing kind off reminds me of captain's Scarlet uniform...some bits from it.

reply

I wondered that myself, but I was never the biggest fan of 'Captain Scarlet' and didn't see much of it, so I can't comment there sadly.

reply

I'm sure that in the pilot during the thunderbird two launch sequence an original shot of thunderbird two's tail fin was used in place of a cg tail fin. I also noticed the Stingray clip which made me smile.

reply

I never noticed that tail-fin part, I'll rewatch the episode sometime and take a look.

reply

I just compared the original TB2 launch to the new TB2 launch and realised I was mistaken. Just goes to show what a good job they have done updating the Thunderbird aircraft to look more modern while keeping the same style of the old. At least in my opinion.

reply

Ah, okay.
On that note, any idea who 'Oliver' was in the newest episode, Space Race? I get the feeling he's a parody of something, but I'll be damned if I can say what.

reply

The "favorite show" reference was silly, though. Even today, if anyone has a favorite (sorry, I'm used to American spelling), they have the show on DVD. They don't wait for reruns over satellite.

Wasn't the Taipei solar collector a redo of "Lord Parker's 'oliday"?

reply

1. It was still a nice little injoke for people who got it though.
2. Yes, but I don't count redos of episodes as references, since the next upcoming episode is titled 'FIREFLASH', and it's going to be a redo of the first ever episode, 'TRAPPED IN THE SKY'. I'm talking about intentional little jokes they slipped in under the radar.

reply

Hmm, obviously Tin-Tin will not be the one who is "Trapped in the Sky" this time, will she?

Boooooooo!!!!

reply

No, but technically she isn't really in the show, unless Kayo is meant to be Tintin in this version, since she is meant to be Kyrano's daughter, the niece of the Hood, which is exactly the role that Tintin had in the original show.

reply

Kayo is Tin-Tin. She had to be renamed to avoids legals issues with the holders of rights to Hergé's TinTin comic book character.

reply

I am aware of that. But she is NOT Tin-Tin to the fans of the original series. Funny, they did not have those "legal issues" back then when both characters also existed.Everyone is so sue happy now.It is ridiculous.

Considering that the episode completely forgot about Tin-Tin being aboard Fireflash about halfway through anyway, so what?

But she is NOT Tin-Tin to the fans of the original series.

I am a fan of the original series and I really don't care whether she is Tin-Tin or not. She is the same person in spirit, but if the pilot is any indication she is playing a more meaningful role in the stories. The original Tin-Tin was in most of the episodes and yet seldom actually DID anything. She had no impact on the story...save maybe "Sun Probe" where she is the first to pass out and nearly crashes Thunderbird 3 into the sun. Um...Yay?

For all the things that are wrong with the reboot, Kayo is one thing they've gotten right. Thunderbird Shadow > serving coffee.

Funny, they did not have those "legal issues" back then when both characters also existed.

There also wasn't a Hollywood movie based upon the Herge Tin-Tin. Honestly, you're terribly naive if you didn't realize that this would happen. The original Tin-Tin was never a particularly well-known character in popular culture, certainly not compared to Virgil or Penelope or Brains. Re-naming them would be problematic because the general audience would notice, not just the fanbase. But Tin-Tin? Far fewer people will notice or care about her absence. She was the most likely character to be changed from the beginning.

There were three Tintin films made before Thunderbirds premiered, and two more after. Now, five more are planned. Why ? I do not understand the appeal. And why was there no legal action against the live action disaster in 2004? Because it did not make any money?

Tintin and Tin-Tin (note the different spellings?) are of different genders, nationalities, ages, and there is certainly no resemblance. Anyone who even thinks that one copied the other is more than naïve, they are daft.

Should the owners of the I Love Lucy copyright sue Hanna-Barbera and The Flinstones because both shows had characters named Fred ? That is how silly it is.

I am not going to argue about this with you any longer because you are ridiculous. Either you have a personal dislike for Asian women or you are just bored. Either way, you are a waste of time and logic.

...You know you've lost.

There were three Tintin films made before Thunderbirds premiered

All in French and would have had absolutely nowhere near the level of recognition
that a Spielberg-directed blockbuster does. I said Hollywood!

And why was there no legal action against the live action disaster in 2004?

Because it was before the aforementioned Spielberg film?

Anyone who even thinks that one copied the other is more than naïve, they are daft.

The resemblance wouldn't have to be deliberate for copyright issues to apply.

In the 60s Gerry Anderson could get away with saying it was coincidence, if the issue even came up at all. The production team of Thunderbirds Are Go can't. Not after Spielberg made the character too well-known.

Should the owners of the I Love Lucy copyright sue Hanna-Barbera and The Flinstones because both shows had characters named Fred?

This is got to be the dumbest analogy I've ever heard.

"Fred" is a common name in the English-speaking world. "Tin-Tin", regardless of spelling, is not. In fact I've never heard it at all outside of these two characters.

And should those characters have shared the same surname...then yes, they absolutely could have sued. "Harry" and "Potter" are both common names and there are real people with that name. But you try getting a book with a main character called "Harry Potter" published. Not going to happen even if said character bore no resemblance to JK Rowling's creation other than in name.

That is how silly it is.

It is what it is. They couldn't use the name "Tin-Tin". Just as they can't refer to FAB 1 as a Rolls-Royce.

Either you have a personal dislike for Asian women

Yes, clearly I dislike Asian women even though I just said I like a character in the show who is an Asian woman. 

Thank you very much, Steven !

And to you, Mr. Zurkon-
If that is your idea of a woman.....Oh, never mind!

My point was the same as TheChamCham's. This is a new character, filling the role.

Caught two more in the latest episode, 'Heist Society'
Firstly they mention an element tiled Centurion 21
Secondly, John briefly mentions a 'Spectrum satellite', which seems to be a thinly veiled throwback to Captain Scarlet

reply

"Centurium 21". And, yes on the "Spectrum Satellite".

reply

Plus references to Operation Crash Dive, Stingray, the Perils of Penelope and many more :D

There's mention of SHADO alpha one moonbase in an episode. SHADO moonbase is from UFO and Moonbase Alpha was from Space1999.

reply

The episode "Legacy" has a scene set on Mateo Island. I believe that this location first appeared in one of the TV21 comic strips in the 1960's.

BTW the whole episode was essentially a remake of the 2004 movie (but did it better).

Yeah i didn't quite make the connection with the 'frakes' movie but i was thinking this is somewhat familiar.

Gotta say this episode was probably the best so far imho, a shame they had to run into the cliche 'saved by the bell' trope that is still overused in everything.
