I second the earlier commenters: Gervais is funny, but The Office was more than just funny. Merchant brings the je ne sais quoi that, IMVHO, might well make or break any such project. The bar is set very, very high and so to go it alone would be a fool's errand.
Did you read that on a internet forum? As far as I know Merchant decided to do Hello Ladies on his own as he didn't believe Gervais could relate to it so Gervais started working on something different and now their time frames are out of whack. Nothing more than that as far as I or anyone else not directly involved knows.
@GarryMMM ...their time frames are out of whack. That's a pretty weak excuse for not having Merchant working on this. We're talking about The Office here, not some stupid Flanimals book.
Gervais' ego dictates that Merchant's involvement in the original Office was minimal. Whenever he's discussing the show in interviews, it's always 'I' and not 'We'.
No. If you listen to the old radio shows with Karl, you'd know how Gervais sees it as a duo effort. Him being the lead actor made many think it was all him, and Merchant was salty about that. Merchant has a serious issue of narcissism that shines through and if anything, he'd be the one not wanting to work on this in fear that people won't give him credit. But this is a very different thing to The Office anyway, and is a story that probably fits Gervais more than Merchant. They work better together, though.

I've listened to all the old radio shows, and I don't think Stephen showed any narcissism. I think he was rightly upset that it was a joint effort but Ricky unapologetically got 99% of the credit, got invited to meet the queen, got invitations to special celebrity gigs, and overall treated Stephen as a forgettable sidekick.
Derek was an awful pile of steaming, putrid faeces.
Are you kidding? Derek was brilliant. Did you watch it all?
At first I was put off by the subject matter as I didn't want to watch someone taking the piss out of the disabled but after seeing it I realised how smart, funny and heartwarming it was. I forgot I was watching Ricky Gervais after a while, as it felt like Derek was a real person. And I cried buckets over it. reply share
Some humour and a whole load of pathos - I found it very genuine and touching.
It was saccharine to the worst degree. Emotionally manipulative rubbish. Karl Pilkington, basically playing himself, was the only redeeming thing about it and he left after one season.

I dont want to sound like a nostalgia freak, but even if Merchant was on the case they'd never reach the comedy gold that was achieved 14 years ago, just not possible in this day and age unfortunately...
