Documentary within a documentary?

Some of the scenes look like 80s footage of kids watching movies (showing their reactions, etc) and going to the video store to pick out a tape. The hair, clothes and picture quality looks spot-on for the time. I was wondering if it was all staged, or did they edit in other footage from another doc, too? I know at least one segment was real because there were tracking lines over the boy's face.

That footage is from an ABC news report from the 80s!

That was probably my favorite footage. I was also wondering how you came upon it. It's a really cool look back at that time. Was it expensive or hard to license?
