How to waste two million dollars

Like other reviewers have commented I'm not sure why the SyFy channel bothers making these low budget films. Some of the acting was reasonable but the special effects were worse than the early (wonderful for their day) ones used for the 1984 film 'The Last Starfighter'.

The aliens were ok though but nothing original was made of the invasion story. I guess the channel must make some of their money back on DVD sakes and selling it abroad - but why not stop making a string of low quality - low budget films and save up for something decent - another film in the Starship troopers series perhaps.

But I suppose some SyFy exec pitched this film as something different.

'Look guys this film is going to be great and original' 'Forget about the rubbish we've produced in the past - this is the one!'

'Ok it's about a giant spaceship which comes into Earth orbit - ok?' 'Then it launches smaller ships and from these come fighter ships that have force fields ok?'

'Major cities get attacked and there's no hope cause the aliens are bullet proof see?''So there's no hope but along come a group of old age pensioners who use one of the alien craft to infiltrate the mother ship and blow it up - ok?'

'Then these pensioners who have blown up the mother ship lose their physic link and crash land in the desert - but they all survive and end up hugging each other - the end'

The same thing bothers me about inexpensive cars and low budget films - it would end up about the same production cost to make a well designed, pleasing to the eye car as an ugly, poorly designed car, and the same for films - a well written film with original ideas and well executed tastefully used special effects would cost the same as this rubbish. I am starting to think a certain small group of people have control in Hollywood, if you aren't in that group you don't get to work. That would explain why even when they buy ideas from overseas they still can't execute it correctly - some recent examples are Rake from NZ and Wilfred from AU.

Syfy channel is just an extreme example of this. When they have a series with great acting, scripting and sparing well executed special effects, they kill it as soon as possible. Yet the crap keeps on being made.

Perhaps it's something to do with tax write offs or ensuring they don't produce anything creative which could affect the box office on major Hollywood films.

I don't think I've ever soon seen a decent SyFy production. Certainly not 'Savage Planet' which has some hilarious reviews from disgruntled viewers.

An alien planet full of Alaskan style killer bears? I laughed until I stopped.

The channel is funded by the U.S Department of Defense so of course they are obligated to waste money. Two million is cheap compared to what they usually spend. Plus, it gets us used to the idea that the DOD can take care of any emergency or for recruitment purposes like Top Gun.
Actually, I thought it was a fun movie once I realized it was a comedy.

Well I nearly died watching it - but not through laughter.
