Bess is not very likable in this

I've only watched part one of this "biopic" but Bess is not very likable as depicted. From what I've read about Houdini he and his wife had a loving marriage. Because they had no children they had many pets which Bess cared for lovingly. I didn't get this side of her in part one.

She's more shrill in ep 2.

Shrill and apparently racist.

If you're referring to the scene where she says "I'm just a dumb girl who married a Jew", my jaw dropped as well. But I think, in the context of the massive row they were having, she said it just for shock value and to hurt him rather than saying what she really believed.

Adrien Brody's reaction was priceless, however. This guy's such a good actor, how did his career get so derailed?

DAD!! Tom Cruise won't come out of the closet!!!

Yes, his reaction was perfection. Shock and heartbreak, all in once glance. He's just so good.

Judging by his reaction, I'd say you're right. It was most likely said purposely to get a rise out of him and shock him. If she said things like that often, he wouldn't have looked so crushed.

I thought she was. I guess it depends on your point of view. It's a realistic view of a woman, though, rather than the wimpy Janet Leigh version.

After all, the movie is showing that he is unfaithful, drags her around the world while risking his health and life at every turn. In reality, they are bound to have had arguments about all that, don't you think?

The movie depicted a loving relationship, to me. But he loved his mother most of all, of course.

They were not figures on top of a wedding cake. They were real people, much like people you and I know. People who love each other but have troubled times, good times, lots of love making, some arguments, some doubts.

I have no quibble with the character as presented, but I didn't care for the actress. I laughed out loud when she would do the jaw drop scenes - she looked completely stupid.

I was confused by the casting choice for her. The actress looked familiar but I have no idea where I've seen her from but I wasn't impressed. Maybe next to Adrian Brody she just seemed extra horrible but I felt like she was half-assing it the whole time. I didn't believe her character at all. It was an actress trying to act and badly at that. It was disappointing. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt and say they didn't give her enough to work with but a good actress can improve upon a bad script/story not that I'm saying that's what this show is.
