I've seen this movie more times than I'd care to admit, but the ending has always thrown me.

When Matt gets the civil war ring and all the clocks start going off, was that supposed to seen as a proposal? Or are we supposed to assume they're already engaged by that point and they decide she can just use the ring as her wedding band?

It pains me how much thought I've given this matter. Any input would be great!

My take is that the clocks chime to "affirm" their love, that they are soul mates. He even found the perfect (for her) proposal ring!

So no, they are not engaged in the final scene, but we are to believe they will be soon.
