She was a hallucination right ? Her Mom died at the early childhood Wedding shooting, and the phone calls were just Meadow's talking to her self ? The phone was yellow on both ends of the calls, plus no one else ever talked with the Mom

She was killed during the shooting - this is made clear when the flashback to her funeral and burial is shown.
sharethat's what I took away. miss meadows had yet to deal w/ her death, which is why she felt the urge to speak to her.
I think when she met the sheriff & decided to get married... she came to the realization that she had someone that would take care of her, & no longer needed to continue w/ the charade.
the final phone "conversation" basically snapped her back into reality.
The phone calls seemed a wonderful device to convey her mental state and provide some background. I thought something was up when they were both shown knitting a white baby blanket on similar phones. It seemed possible from the conversations that there may have been more trauma we were not shown. Kate's performance after pulling the gun on the little girl and speaking about giving life was very moving.
