A bluebird, an eagle, and some deer - symbolism (spoilers)
The deer threw me off.
I initially thought the bluebird, squirrel, and deer were meant to symbolize her childlike innocence. The vibrant colors, the long hair, the pretty, white dress. It was all like taken from a Disney story.
Considering what she goes through in the movie, I wasn't surprised by the change in tone in the end. Her hair is tied up, her dress has been replaced by a skirt, the colors in the final shot are dark, and the bluebird has been replaced with an eagle (I think that was an eagle, yeah?)... but then came the deer, and the entire house of cards I'd built up around this symbolism came crashing down.
We all agree that the animals were figments of her imagination, right? So do the deer imply that while she's matured, she's still got a bit of that innocence in her?
Any suggestions?
