“Faking It” didn’t make it as long as creator Carter Covington had hoped. While Tuesday’s series finale showed Amy and Karma in a good place with their friendship, they never got to explore a romantic relationship. Covington has revealed how that relationship would have played out if the MTV show had been renewed for Season 4.

“It was always my intention to make ‘Karmy’ happen during our final season,” Covington wrote in a letter published by the Hollywood Reporter. “Karma [Katie Stevens] would finally realize that her possessiveness of Amy [Rita Volk] might be a sign of deeper feelings for her best friend. She’d struggle to share these feelings with Amy, knowing she couldn’t lead Amy on again unless she was sure. Unable to let another chance go by, Karma would impetuously kiss Amy, and a fresh ‘Whoa ...’/‘I know ...’ moment would spark this new phase of their relationship.”

The Season 3 finale, which ended up serving as the series finale, didn’t get to explore Karma and Amy’s relationship. Both seemed to be happy dating other people. Amy made up with Sabrina (Sophia Taylor Ali) while Karma shared a surprising kiss with Felix (Parker Mack). However, if the comedy had had time to plan a proper finale, the girls would have ended up with different people.

The executive producer knows it would have been satisfying to see Karma and Amy finally together. Yet, the plan wasn’t for them get married and be together forever. “But slowly it would have become clear that in becoming a couple, the two of them had lost something that made them ... them,” Covington continued. “Eventually, they would both realize they’d have to sacrifice their relationship to save their friendship. The series would have ended with Karma and Amy’s life goals intact: roommates in college, houses next door to each other, best friends forever. That is what Karmy always meant to me.”

In Covington’s eyes, that’s a happy ending for the girls. They’d finally understand where they stood, and the girls would be able to move on romantically but still maintain their friendship. “I never envisioned Karma and Amy riding off a cliff, holding hands like Thelma and Louise,” Covington told TVLine. “The happy ending is that their friendship has survived and they remain the most important people in each other’s lives. What people really respond to in the show is having a person who always has your back and loves you unconditionally. The romantic part of it is less important.”

Well. All I have to say to that is maybe if they hadn't fcked around with all those stupid story lines that no one cared about and actually made the show about the ONE couple that people watched the show for, Karmy, they would have A) had the chance to do all of that, and/or B) might have been picked up for another season. So, so stupid. Frustrating and stupid. UGH.

It sounds like the original goal was for Karma and Amy to explore what being in love is like, but ultimately it would end with them just being friends. If that's true then I prefer the way it actually ended with Sabrina with Amy together instead. I feel like there is a lot more hope for that relationship since you could see how much of a mess they both were when they were apart.

I'm not saying I'm glad it ended. In fact I'm not only going to miss the show, I'm going to miss all of you. But if it had to end with Karma and Amy just being friends, then this way was better.

It makes me wonder what endgames Carter actually pictured for Amy and Karma. Would Sabrina have returned in the end even after being dumped by Amy for Karma, or would Amy have ended up with Felix or maybe Reagan, or maybe a new character... Karma probably would've ended up with Liam.

I've got nothing against God, it's his fanclub I can't stand

And this is why the show needed to end. The only plan this show ever had was tease Amy and Karma as much as possible.

reply

What they should have done was have Amy and Karma get together, explore that relationship for a while, and ultimately get married and grow old together as best friends and lovers.

reply

Except Karma isn't attracted to women.

reply

Karma isn't a real person. She's just a character written down in a script and played out in real life in front of a camera. Therefore if the writers say she's attracted to Amy, then she's attracted to Amy. Carter Covington wrote:

Karma [Katie Stevens] would finally realize that her possessiveness of Amy [Rita Volk] might be a sign of deeper feelings for her best friend. She’d struggle to share these feelings with Amy, knowing she couldn’t lead Amy on again unless she was sure. If the writer had Karma and Amy attempt to really date that wouldn't mean Karma likes women. The only reason to have Amy and Karma date is so the show could move past it.

reply

Karma obviously likes Amy, given her possessiveness and the drunk kiss in the pool. And now Carter Covington's revelation of Karma's deeper feelings for Amy followed by an impetuous kiss.

I realize that Carter didn't see them getting married or anything. What I'm saying is that that would have been a better ending. It was always their dream to grow old together after all.

reply

They still can grow old together but ending the show with them dating when the creator say the wasn't the end goal makes no sense. Except as fan service.

reply

It makes plenty sense to those of us who thought they belonged together. The writers may not have thought so, but that doesn't mean that plenty of others didn't see it.

Karmy shippers feel like we got gypped because they teased the whole Karmy relationship, and we expected them to get together.

reply

Like I said fan service.

reply

I wouldn't go that far to call it fan service. Plenty of people in the writers room saw it ending this way too.

reply

People saw it ending with Amy and Karma together because the show never presented either with a viable alternative until season 3.

reply

Well, if that's the case thank God the show got cancelled.

Besides the magical ending Carter had in mind - S3 was complete crap. Cancellation was always end game for this show the way Carter went about it. In the end Carter, you have a teen show on your hands. Nothing else and nothing more.

I didn't like the last season at all, so it didn't bother me that it was cancelled...I probably wouldn't have watched another season. I think having Amy and Karma be a couple would have been ridiculous; total fan service. So, I guess I'm sort of glad it got cancelled.

reply

I'm a Karmy shipper but I feel like too much time had passed for them to still get together in another season. If they wanted to have them attempt to date it should have happened by season 2 or 3. I think it's unrealistic Karma would question feelings for Amy after so much time had passed. Realistically they could have had Karma confused and questioning after Any dated her first girlfriend. That would make sense as to why her feelings would bubble to the surface. It doesn't make as much sense when that ship has totally sailed. If this was the creators plan all along they should have given it a believable timeline. I know they probably wanted to tease out the Karmy story but it's just not realistic in the seasons we got for that to have happened after season 3.
