6 out of 10 Noni ruined it for me.

So lost why critics praised this flat spoiled girl turned good performance. Actually I was more impress with Driver and Parker performances.

I really don't think it was all her fault. I agree she was the winkest link which is bad considering she is the main character. Yet, I felt the script was not very strong.

Noni held this movie together with her strong performance, Nate Parker really disappointed I was really hoping he could break and be the strong romantic performer but instead he sucked the humor out of every scene he walks around with this grimace look on his face yes he looks great but he had no life and showed no comedic timing. This film had no outlet for take a breath and laugh for a sec it was very serious but despite that I did enjoy it.

with this grimace look on his face

What is up with Nate's grimace? I noticed that too. I haven't seen him in much so is this his normal acting style? Is it his style to look perplexed in every single shot? I didn't see Great Debaters but was he like that in that movie as well? I would think Denzel, who directed Debaters, would be able to pull some emotion out of Nate. I may have to see that film to do a comparison. He had no presence on the screen against Gugu. Maybe he was trying to play the character that way because there are people that lack a personality in the way that he did in this movie. If that was his goal, then he gave a brilliant performance. Still I enjoyed the film. It was much better than I expected it to be and I think most people will feel that way if they give it a chance.

I've seen all of Nates movies I really like him even as an activist I like what he does he tries to give back and make moves that make a difference, but his whole grimace and hunched backed persona was too noticeable he seemed tense I mean his style is sort of this straight laced dont piss me off type but I believe he should have taken a different approach for this film. I would have he would have probly called up Kevin Costner or Denzel for some advice on home to balance the comedy with the melodrama he could have really stood out in this film ya know be the young stud that black actors are lacking this was basically his Channing Tatum(Dear John) (Ryan Gosling (The Notebook) etc... I do think Gugu was strong especially in the last scene with Minnie Driver it was apparent that she carried the movie and I did enjoy it. Then again from Nates standpoint I wanted more cause there are not a lot of young black dramantic actors, still a good watch tho lol.

I bet all of you critics are Academy Award winning actors too, that's why you are allowed to be so critical, right? You have all honed your craft and Gugu and Nate haven't? Therefore, they did a terrible job on this film and should quit acting? Is this also why people have come to post on these message boards raving about how its such an amazing movie?

I disagree with the criticism of Nate's performance. His character has to be serious because he's under a lot of pressure to rally the support of the city and win election in spite of a negative media presence. He carries himself as someone who is on a mission, and love is serious business to him. Nate loosened up where the script called for it. His charisma was very present and it yielded some authentic and subtle moments that the audience I watched with largely responded to. Nate handled the material well imo.

If you ever thought Noni was a "spoiled girl" you didnt pay attention to this movie.
