Ending confusion (spoilers)

Hi, I guess I wasn't paying enough attention.

So, for the whole movie I know he has to make a choice of either telling the truth and dooming the company, or lying and saving the miners their jobs.

So, he rats out his boss but... which path was that? and... did the boss deserve it? I was slightly lost, appreciate some insight.

Yes, he spoke out against the company. The boss was informed of potentially dangerous conditions and he told them to stop complaining and not talk to the other miners about it.

In other words, he made a decision to tell the truth, just as the boy did.

I'd say this film is about avoiding guilt as much as it is about grief

Both the boy and Amos did the right thing by telling the truth.
