you cannot just transfer the Manga series to Anime one to one.

The filler episodes of the original series gave room for character development,
this reboot seems like a disney version of Sailor Moon, it's unnecessary and lame.
I loved the original series and I never read the Mangas and I never felt that the Anime misses something, while of course I watched it as a young teen.
They should have made a reboot movie and then just continue the storyline from the last season on.

A reboot from the last season on? How exactly would that work? I'm pretty sure though for anything to get the green light, it has to go through the creator of Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi first since the work belongs to her. And we're unsure whether or not she would even give the go ahead for such a project.

reply

no, a two hour anniversary reboot movie or mini series and then a normal new season.
I heard that the Manga series ended with the wedding of Usagi/Bunny and Mamuro so, there are certainly plenty stories left to tell for the Anime version.

What's unnecessary to you, is well regarded to others. I loved the original, but let's face it, the majority of the filler episodes did nothing for character development. It was just introduce a character, have the monster of the week attack them, have the Sailors intercede, have Tuxedo Mask intercede, and have Sailor Moon triumph.

reply

It's unnecessary imao for the simple fact that this reboot suggests being better than the original series by being closer to the Manga which I cannot agree with because the original series was legendary to me and therefore perfect, and I would find it a pity if this generation of teens got introduced to a rushed, trivialized new, suger-sweet version of Sailor Moon.
In the original Series every new Character had a new often dramatic story and challenge the Sailors had to deal with.

Once again, you're entitled to your opinion, but just because you prefer the original, doesn't make it better. I agree it was excellent, but Naoko was never happy with the changes. The original is being re-released and the new generation has plenty of chance to see it. But I do disagree that the new story is rushed, trivialized or sugar sweet.

But the "new" story is just the old story in a modified and as it seems deluted version, seeing a computer animated transformation scene made me almost sick, is this the only valuable contributon of this reboot?
I just can't see any other stringent argument for a reboot than making money, so Naoko supposedly didn't like the changes, whatever changes there were, so what, I mean the series was a worldwide success and she is a Manga artist and don't forget, Mangas are black and white and this fact alone makes it impossible to compare the two genres,
some things that work in a manga just don't work as an Anime, I'm just saying that there are some sacrileges that you shouldn't touch like rewriting a legend and so I'm sure this new series won't ever be as successful as the original

So basically what you're saying irfo, is that they shouldn't have made the new series. Because as much as we might want to see a 6th season of the original, Naoko wasn't going to write one.

reply

I'm just worried that this reboot might tarnish the legend somewhat, it's not a complete disaster but they could have at least make it look better but instead it looks like it's a cheaply produced old version except for the computer animations and I really don't like this, especially the fighting scenes are lame.

I guess this is one of those agree to disagree things. My wife and friends who watch it, love what they're doing.

reply

Maybe it's because I was a kid when I watched it and so I associate Sailor Moon with my early teenage times and I feel like this series misses a great deal of what then intrigued me so much and what I found cool about the characters and story maybe it's also due to me being older now and so my perception changed somewhat.

Its possible. I was around 40 when I first saw the dub and did my best to track down all 5 seasons of the subtitled show. And so there's no misunderstanding, I did love the show. I quite liked the live version 10 or so years ago. But neither of them have stopped me from loving this incarnation.

this series that is being released online - and free - is not the finished product. they've been very clear about this since the beginning. so yes, it is rushed. there are a tons of websites pointing out this. everything will be touched up on the Blu-ray Discs.

I for one have longed to see a closer version to the manga and without useless motw filler. this is actually a good thing for the so called 'legendary' original series because it provides access to a new generation to see both as well as have fans who were around when the original aired to whine and wag their finger and school the youngnin on how much better the former version is.

reply

I've seen several people quote the fact that the aired version isn't the final one, but I've never seen an actual statement from the producers. I don't suppose you have a link?

Why would someone release an unfinished free version? that makes no sense at all.

You should read the mangas. The original anime is great, it's what I began watching and then later found the mangas. I love Crystal. I love the old, but I also love this new. Each gives us something different to appreciate, and the new is great because some of those fillers were terrible. Anyway I feel you can't fairly judge if you've not read the books. Read them.

reply

Oh let's face it, the new series is incredibly rushed. And in regards to anime adapted from manga, ALMOST all series takes liberties and change some things around.

Having said that, SuperS was just plain awful and had way too much filler. The final battle felt like nothing at all and was also drawn out more than it should have been.

I'm not saying the new series is not enjoyable, but it does go by incredibly fast for the amount of time it takes to tell the story. The manga also felt this way and was to me, unrealistic. The original anime felt closer to what would have happened in the real world. S had some great filler episodes, especially for Uranus and Neptune. I loved the episodes where the Outer senshi and Sailor Moon clashed on how to deal with the pure hearts.

I enjoy both, but the original I hold to higher degree of a more realistic portrayal of how people interact and go about their lives.

reply

I'd unfortunately agree; though I'd also recommend reading the manga, it's good.

Why some people think the filler episodes were just monsters of the week episodes are beyond me, but whatever. They still did develop the characters.

reply

SM was probably the first anime I ever saw. I was about five, and I would watch it before school or on weekends. At the time, I thought it was the BEST THING EVER, and I own a boxset in its all of its original, uncut, Japanese glory. I still enjoy it, but having said that, it's not perfect -- in fact, it's incredibly far from it.

I think it's normal to view our childhood favourites through a set of nostalgia glasses, which is why we're attached to them and shudder at any sort of 'new' version. I don't think Crystal is perfect either, by any means, but as someone who has read the manga, it's great to have something that's so much more faithful, with some beautifully updated animation to match.

Personally speaking, I know I will never be able to enjoy Sailor Moon, in any of its mediums, as much as I did when I was younger simply because my tastes have changed as I've grown up. This is probably the closest I'll get to experiencing that 'love' again, though.

The only issue I have with the reboot is the CGI overload. I very much dislike Sailor Moon's henshin sequence. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus' are to me, an upgrade. Even Sailor Moon's finishing pose is off... she looks like she let herself go... no hips and curves like the original Anime.

I love Crystal for the most part. The voice acting is great... I never thought I would like anyone replace Aya, Michie, Emi and Rica... but the new actresses have wowed me. In the original Anime, Minako was at timesseemingly the least trained and not very dependable (sans R Movie). In Crystal; this is the Minako I want: she is meant to be the most experienced of the bunch, maybe even more so than Neptune.

There is no filler to catch your breathe or give the story more room to explore other plots; but in all I'very loved the Manga and if I wanted to see Sailor Moon Classic, I wouldn't be watching Crystal.

There are plenty of stories to tell after stars, usagi graduates high school for starters. Events where crystal toyoko is building and stuff like that.

reply

Of course there are other stories, but who would write them?

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

reply

Exactly. I would die of happiness if Naoko suddenly announced plans to write a whole new arc...but I am 99.9% certain that ain't happening. And there's just no way she would allow someone else to take up the mantle of her pride and joy, highly beloved manga series.

reply

I'd like to see more stories set in the Sailor Moon universe.
