This is foreign to me in my own country..
As easy as it would be to state, "oh, it's the South.. figures!" wouldn't be fair as I've witnessed a degree of "racism, prejudice, bigotry" expressed in many areas of the western U.S. from the Rockies to the Pacific Northwest. Nothing like the acceptance that the folks in this documentary adhere to, believe in and apply to everyday life. My exposure as a white man raised in and living primarily with Latinos/whites my first 30 years; each side occasionally throwing out a slur when they're together. it's not meant with hatred by the majority, actually sometimes it's received as an endearment if you know one another well. Not once where it has resulted in major violence, certainly not death. When it does happen it's usually gang related: skin heads, white supremacists, Latinos, black or Vietnamese gangs, etc. So, yes.. I'm aware people make slurs that individually they normally wouldn't speak in mixed company. Group or mob mentality brings it out which happens worldwide. It's usual that we play, attend school, live amongst one another and celebrate each others holidays with BBQ's, picnics, street fests, etc. Racial differences are celebrated and we enjoy these activities from green beer to chili fests. Getting back to my subject line. The way of life accepted in portions of the South seems strange and upsetting to many. For those stating we're a bunch of liberals attempting to put your lifestyle aside; try to understand it's a situation that really is foreign to a vast majority of the nation be they conservatives or liberal, and yes.. we have both.
