I think the high pitched voice you detect is his original voice coming back. You notice that his voice became raspier due to smoking by the 80s but I've noticed his soft voice has been coming back these last few years since he had switched to herbal cigarettes for 2 decades or so.

In general I find Pacino to be very over rated, right along side De Niro.
