The site for that review doesn't seem to be working. Ah well. I've always enjoyed the story of Saul/Paul. I think I'll give this movie a chance.

Looks like they didn't read the Bible. The description says "The stoning of Stephen shattered Saul's faith in the temple and the denial of Christ." Ummmmm the Bible says the stoning of Stephen inspired Paul to go after other Christians. He was happy to help at the stoning. The thing that brought Paul to Christ was the vision on the Road to Damascus.
Acts 8:1
Saul wholeheartedly approved of Stephen’s death. And on that day a great and relentless persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem; and the believers were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.

It's strange that the producers would decide to change the story around like that. Did they think Saul witnessing a stoning was more traumatic and life changing than what happened to him on the road to Damascus?

The way it was filmed it used that event, which signaled an important moment where Christ-followers started calling themselves 'Christian', as a memory device for Saul's later conversion. You could say he maybe had conflicted emotions in the movie, and that he started to feel the anguish caused by the outspoken 'Nazarene' followers as he called them. This was not tantamount to causing his turning in favor against the Jewish leaders' agenda. They did re-envision how he'd been connected to the Roman soldier friend. Also, how he'd connected on the road to Damascus again, communicating with the martyred disciple's family then joining altogether them.
