USA release date?

Does anybody know if this film will be released in theaters in the USA? We had The Wind That Shakes The Barley but it only came out on dvd and on netflix a few years afterward, not in theaters.

reply

It would be unlikely to come out in more than a handful of theatres as it would have even less appeal to American audiences than 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley'.

reply

Okay, thanks. I'll just have to wait for the dvd then because I doubt it will be playing in my area.

Pint,

I hope you are wrong about the U.S. release. :)

I saw it and thought it held more appeal than The Wind that Shakes the Barley (no harm to Wind - it was great!).

During these times in America - foreclosures, unemployment, poverty, removal of art and music programs from schools, an increasingly militarized police force and the effects of religion on government... I think Jimmy's Hall pertains to a lot of Americans.

Ironically, the ones who would show interest probably can't afford movie tickets!

And these are the reasons why it won't get a wide release... not only in the USA, but in the world. These are not themes suitable for mass entertainment. Also, it has no superheroes, and, even more confusingly, the fascists in it don't wear swastikas.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley did get released in theaters--I saw it in San Diego.

Jimmy's Hall is getting a decent release. The Sony website shows about 100 theaters showing it either now or in the future:

And that doesn't include any in NYC, LA or SF--I assume it's been there and gone already.

It IS scheduled for Odessa, Abilene, and Wichita Falls, Texas, which boggles my mind. I can't imagine there are more than 3 people in any of those cities who would to go a subtitled film (a/k/a in those parts as "those ones you have to read"). Now, this one won't have subtitles, but they'll wish it did.

I saw The Wind That Shakes the Barley in an indie theater in Santa Cruz, CA the year it was released in the U.S.

Jimmy's Hall just opened in Eugene, OR. Going to see it this week. Again, in an indie theater. If you want adult-themed movies that tend to skip the multiplexes be prepared to drive a little farther (most of the time) and don't wait for everything to hit your small screen. You won't find the festivals, rare releases, film discussions, local presentations and wider storytelling all under one roof if we let independent theaters fade away like the drive-ins did.

I just got to see it in a theater in Florida, more than a year after your inquiry... not a multiplex.
